New Shocks

I think I am ready to replace the stock shocks on my 2007 F-350 FX4. From what I have been reading it is amazing they lasted (or I could tolerate them) this long. I have heard lots of good things about the Bilsteins in the past, so is this the route I should go?

My truck is a crew cab, long bed, 4WD with the 6.0L. I do some light towing, lots of in town/freeway driving, with some camping/off roading from time to time. Looking for some suggestions as to what I should get. I will probably do all 4 at the same time. Also, where would be the best place to get them? Thanks for the advice!

Furian: Thanks for the tip, I will definitely look into that.

My truck has the stock suspension, no lift on it, so looking through Bilstein's website it looks like the 5100 series are what would work for my truck, both front and rear. Does that sound right?

After reviewing the Bilstein application guide (see link below), it appears that you have the option of using either the "Heavy Duty (HD)" series or the 5100 series shocks. The "HD" series is the basic line of shocks while the 5100 series is a notch better for off-road applications. The part #'s and pricing at shockwarehouse.com are listed below.

HD Series Shocks:
Front - Part # F4-BE5-C295-H0 - $51.11 each (w/ 25% discount)
Rear - Part # F4-BE5-C296-H0 - $68.14 each (not subject to 25% discount)
Total Regular Price: $272.56
Less 25% Discount Savings: <$20.60>
Less 5% FTE Membership Savings: <$11.92>
Total Discounted Price:$240.04

5100 Series Shocks:
Front - Part # F4-BE5-C335-H0 - $62.93 each (w/ 25% discount)
Rear - Part # F4-BE5-C336-H0 - $62.93 each (w/ 25% discount)
Total Regular Price: $335.60
Less 25% Discount Savings: <$83.88>
Less 5% FTE Membership Savings: <$12.89>
Total Discounted Price: $238.83

The current special at shockwarehouse.com applies to all listed shocks except the rear HD shocks. It's a "no brainer" to order the better 5100 series shocks, which are cheaper in price. You'll get free shipping as well.

Wow, thanks for all the info! It looks like I will be getting the 5100 series for my truck then. A guy at work is running Rancho RS9000's on his with the controller; does anybody run these? Are they any good?

Are the shocks on these trucks easy to replace on a Saturday afternoon with common hand tools and a couple cold ones? Just don't want to get into it then get stuck.

Thanks again for the help!

I re-checked my math and it is incorrect... sorry. The price for the "HD" shocks is $226.58 and the price for the "5100" shocks is $239.12. The "5100" shocks will cost you an additional $12.54.

Just want to make sure the shocks you name will work on my truck before I order them.

The statement that has me worried for the fronts is: "Use on trucks with 2-inches of suspension lift. Compression bump stop on chassis may need to be modified to prevent damage to the shock absorber. This is standard when placing longer shocks in the stock location."

And the statement for the rears is: " Use on trucks with up to 1-inch of suspension lift."

Like I said, I have a completely stock suspension, and don't want to have to do anything special to get these on my truck. Will they bolt up just like normal with no problems?

Thanks again for all the help.

Personally, I would just go with the HD on a standard suspension truck. The 5100 are called racing shocks, and thus have no warranty.

The HD work out fine for most people.

Thanks for the heads-up, I didn't even think about that. Only problem with the Bilstein HD shocks is I really don't like the color scheme on them. (I know, might be something stupid, but yellow and baby blue just don't go with my truck.) I have heard people liking Edelbrock shocks as well....anybody have the IAS Performers? Are they any good?

Are you really worried about the color???

You'll hardly see them once installed.
BTW I got the HD's and they're great.

I can't say I love the yellow color either. The blue boots are okay. But the yellow/blue is so common on trucks that nobody even notices. Just shows you have an eye for quality.

You could make them black in 5 minutes with a rattle can.

The 5100 series as noted is for 2" of lift as previously mentioned. They will work but you will be on the lower edge of the shock with the possibility of bottoming them out. I know it's pretty tough to bottom out the bilstein's but it can happen. The rears wouldn't be a problem. As mentioned no warranty and "any" bilstein you order you may have to wait awhile, possibly months for. Their constantly on back order.

I have the Rancho RS9000 adjustable shocks, they are good, but I will probably just buy the Bilsteins next time. I had the older version controller and may still buy the newer wireless unit. I rarely change the firmness of the shocks by hand. The Bilsteins 5100 are the BEST option for us 4x4 trucks! Shockwharehouse is a great store to buy your shocks

The bilstiens will make the ride a lot stiffer if that matters to you, but are way better than stock. The shock warehouse has the best price and superfast shipping, I got mine in a few days. I have the heavy kyb's on the front and they are o.k. too. They are a pretty red color if you like that better.
