Yeah, same here......it comes and goes. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz with WinXP Home and three gigs of RAM.
I just checked my Add/Remove programs and have to correct my previous statement....I have 3.5.2 installed instead. So downloading the most recent version now.
I recently updated my Nvidia drivers for my 8300 GS card (Dell "stock" low end 8 series "workstation card") Been putting it off doing this for a couple of years because my dialup is so slow out here and HUGE files take several hours (if not a few days). The new drivers do improve my 8300's performance in many ways. Yet, there is so much "stuff in it "for my poor lil' weak card" to deal with if a page has a lot of graphics (FTE "Always" loaded slow for me.....but it's well worth the wait!).
Was beginning to think part of my lag was due to my card trying to play "catchup" sometimes.
"sigh"....well, graphics cards prices have dropped considerably where I can afford something better. At least that will work smoother with the new drivers.

For downloading large files, do you know anyone with high speed? You could visit them, download the file and put it on a flash drive or cd/dvd. Just a thought.
my ff has been crashing a lot lately, since i updated it. don't know why. oh and i hate pc cillin or whatever it is, even though that is what i use.
One thing you can try with your FF is to uninstall it completely then reinstall it from the latest download.
As for the antivirus - maybe try Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) - there is a required registration within 60-days but the free version seems to work fairly well... I used to refer people to AVG but the later offerings have been rather disappointing...
Looks like this has turned into another Firefox thread. Oh well...
When Firefox slows down, open your task manager and click on the processes tab, and see which process is using the heavy resources. It could be a plug-in that is not happy with the particulars of your system or FF version.

i just did this for a couple processes, and it made firefox quite a bit faster. How can I tell what processes I need and which one aren't needed?

The name of the process is similar to the file the system ran to initiate the process. Sometimes you can decipher the purpose by the name. Often not, but if you google the process name you can usually discover what it does, and why it is running.
Be careful with just shutting down a process. I did not suggest doing that, unless you know what it does.
