Idle?

I had taken my V-10 into the shop a few weeks back because I thought I could feel an intermitant miss at idle. They ran a check on it and it showed no codes and of course did not show any sign of a miss.
This last Saturday I pull my dump trailer home from the Ranch and the truck felt a little sluggish and seemed to take extra RPMs to get things going. Today, the first time I have taken the truck out since Saturday, I noticed that the truck on start up would idle around 650 to 700 RPM. But after it was run and at full temp the idle would drop to around 250 to 300 RPM for the most part. A few times the idle back up to 500 RPM and float up a little, but for the better part of the time it was down around that 300 RPM mark. At 250-300 RPM you can hardly turn the steering wheel with extra UMPH!
SO, the Question is: I can't recall what the normal RPMs run at idle for a V-10....can you help me out?

I still have 1,300 miles of warranty remaining so I guess I will take it in come Monday, but my guess is she is sucking air where she shouldn't be.
Care to place your best guess?

Mine is an automatic and idles at 650 in park, 700 in drive. Not sure if the manual would be the same but should be close.

My biggest concern for long term durability on the 3V engines is the plastic intake.

Also, check your fuel and air filters. I know that mine get dirty quick.

The plastic is a non-issue. After Ford realized that you couldn't use the plastic for the water crossover in the front of the intake, they have had no issues whatsoever with them. I know of taxicabs that run basically 24hrs/day and have 500K+ miles on them with the original plastic intake manifolds. The V10's use the same plastic resin on their intake manifolds.

Take it in-you're probably gonna need the throttle body assembly changed. The addition of ETC eliminated the need for the IAC valve since the PCM can control how much air is allowed past the throttle plate via the ETC throttle body motor.

Thanks for that info Johnny. I always wondered about that.

Well, here is a follow up to the situation. I took it into the shop and told them what it was doing. I also mentioned that I thought it may be a vaccume leak. But that someone had also made mention that it could be the throttle body assembly due to the way that the PCM manages the idle control on the 3V V-10. I then told them to first change my gas filter...this was something I was going to do before I took it in in the first place. However after an entire weekend of rain with a total of over 14 inches, I gave up and had the dealership do this for me ($55 with tax).
The dealer called me later the day it was dropped off and told me the filter had been changed, but they were not able to get the idle to act up like I had said it was. Also there were no codes showing in memory. They kept the truck for a few more test drives, checking for leaks, while at the same time ordered a new TB assembly.
The truck I have been told is ready to be picked up and running like a top. It sure is nice to have a service dept that is willing to listen to suggestions and go the extra step to deliver service to the customer.
Thanks for all your imput, that is what makes this such a great site...The Members!!

Just south of Dallas County. Same rain making system just sat in place way too long. Of course up at the DFW Airport, where they take the offical reading the total rain fall was around 5 inches.
Over all it has been one dry year around here, up until I sold off 100 head of our Longhorn cattle.....since then things have greened up pretty nice.

I've been seeing pictures of much of Texas, mostly western?, drying up bad this year.

I guess that's what makes averages. Too little followed by way more than enough.

So did the fuel filter fix it or did you need a new throttle body?

horseracer: I have sent you a PM.
I ended up having the dealer do both items at the same time due to time related and weather issues. Plus the truck was just about out of it's warranty. I ended up paying for the filter and labor to install, Ford covered the TB under warranty.

You didn't mention which model year truck you have. If it is not a 3V version, then there maybe another area to check on the 2V engine relating to idle issues.

There is a lot of good members here the forum, go ahead and list the problem you are having with your truck and what you may have already tried....I am sure others will help out.
