Hello all. I recently discovered a little puddle of transmission fluid under my truck.. booo! I found where it is coming from, and am pretty sure it is leaking from the hose going to the vacuum modulator (P/N 83DT-7A377-A2B I627U). The modulator seems to be pretty loose, not sure if that's how it should be... I have little to no experience working on automatic transmissions. What I need to know is what should I do about this? Will the modulator need to be replaced? Is there a diaphragm of some sort behind it? How do I go about replacing the modulator if it needs it? It seems to be held on by only 1 bolt going into the tranny case, but I am not sure. The old girl is a '91 Ranger extended cab with the 3.0L V6. Help!! Thanks!
It seems as if the transmission is an A4LD upon further research. Looking up in there with an inspection mirror and a flashlight, it looks possible to remove the bolt holding the bracket to the case without removing the catylitic converter heat shield, or the cat itself... if I do remove the modulator, are there any lil pieces that are going to fall into any abyss i should know about? Thanks in advance!
Pull the modulators vacuum line at the intake manafold connecion to check it for tranny fluid.
if there is fluid in it, then the mdulators diaphragm is leaking & the vacuum modulator must be replaced.
I've never changed one, but my repair manuals proceedure seems pretty straight foward & about as how you've described it.
Just move the heat shield foward to gain access to the modulator.
Be sure to lube the new modulators "O" ring seal with tranny fluid before installation.
If you found tranny fluid in the vacuum line, be sure to check the tranny fluid level after the repair, as the engine has been ingesting tranny fluid, so the fluid level may be down some.
