I am not really familiar with the 87 Ranger 4x4, but I had the same problem with my 93 not going into 4x4 and I found it was a small plastic stud cover in the shift motor that caused the problem. Have a look at the great information on this site:

After my post, I also remembered that there is a reset button on the computer that manages the 4x4, which you may want to try before tearing apart your shift motor. I did a quick Google and found this page that has some 4x4 diagnostics for Rangers:
