Hey guys. Im new to this site, i've been on Ford truck world, but i decided to come on over here, due to no one being over there and those damn pop up ads.
I got an 84 f150 4.9. Every now and then, when i make a sharp turn and i go to straighten out, the steering wheel sticks to that side. I have to turn the wheel sideways to make it go straight. And if i turn the opposite way while this is going on, my pump whines, LOUD. I hope its the pump and not the gear box. What do you guys think?
ok, that makes since. Cause something when im turning the opposite way it will all of the sudden let go and jerk me that way, if you know what i mean. Thanks for the quick response! is there anything thing i can tighten of loosen to fix it if its kinking up?
So what you're saying is, when it hangs up and you go to turn the opposite way, you feel something un-stick?
I'm not really sure I can say, seeing as I did replace my own steering box and pump, but as far as adjusting stuff, that's beyond my area of expertise, at least right now. I know there's people here that can answer your second question though.
What I would do though is have a friend watch the steering linkage while you turn the wheel, and watch to see if anything is catching or binding.
Ok, so the guys at work told me it might be my ball joints sticking. So i greased them up tonight and ill see how it goes in the morning. Also, lol my intake and exhaust manifold bots were sooo loose. The front one i could spin the washers it was that loose.
How hard would it be to change them? I just recently pull off my stock voltage regulator and my stock horn, they werent broke, i just didnt want thm to be on when they did!
I'll have to let someone more experienced answer that question. I don't think it's terribly difficult, but I wouldn't want to tell you something I'm unsure about, and then be to blame for something going wrong if you took my advice. Or worse, if you got injured because of my advice. :\
I've been through two or three voltage regulators, lol. My headlight switch went out one time and I think it caused the regulator to overcompensate and let 17 volts through instead of 14. :P
Alright, lol i got a Haynes book, so i might go look and see how to adjust the gear box. Im gonn a need a tir rod end soo, the "boot" was cracked all to hell aso i just took it off.
