hey guys, i just got a letter from ford in the mail with my vin # on it. they said that my truck hasn't had the updated CPS recall done to it.
my question to you is should i do this lol.. my truck is a early 99 and the past 5 years i have owned it i have had no problems with my cps. i just don't want them to mess with it and then me start having problems with it.
Absolutely not!!! Not until your truck starts stalling intermittently. Even then, make sure you double padlock the diagnostic link connector (DLC plug under the dash) to keep those "technicians" from messing up your programming. Programming pays a few tenths worth of labor time, so technicians usually throw an "updated" flash onto the PCM. Usually, this screws up more than it "fixes"...especially when there wasn't a problem to begin with.
My truck is still stalling or cutting out intermitantly. I have changed out the CPS (cam Position Sensor) with one from FLAPS (Friendly Local Autoparts store). Still has same issue of intermitant stall / cutout totally random. When it happens I lift my right foot and then press the pedal again engine re-fires and continues on for 100 miles. or sometimes 10 miles. Bumps affect it more.
hmm thats a weird one. i think you might get more help if you start a new thread. put your problem in the title and every one that has had the same problem will read it.
the only people that are reading this thread are the ones that want to know about the CPS recall.

If you do think your problem is the CPS, it may not be sealed good and getting a little moisture on the senor and it will stall. Mine did that every time it rained. I ended up replacing the CPS twice before finding out it was not sealing good.
I know some folks have had problems with ones purchased from local parts stores. I think Ford and International sell them for less than 20 bucks these days. Its worth a shot...
If I start my own thread it will be titled "My PSD is a POS"
It does seem fuel related really acts up after fill up of really bouncy roads.
but the fact that the dash idiot light come on points me to electrical. Found the GEM (General Electronics module) and can not get it out to look at connections.
Mod--. Feel free to move our posts if this is too much side tracking away from the original topic..
Joe,
I was experiencing the same thing you are describing. I could turn the truck off and back on and the problem went away. I've been chasing it for about a year now and finally after hunting this weekend and hitting allot of Water bars on an incline, It started happing all the time and I had to limp to town and try and fix it.
I replaced the Fuel filter, Fuel Pump, and the CPS..
I didn't think it was the CPS, however because of the Recall, I decided it was worth a try to at least eleminate the idea (especially while sitting in the Rain Working on it)
Finally After injector Buzz test, found P0273, Injector 5 Low(short to ground)
Truck started running worse, and now I have P1295Bank 1 Multiple faults.
I had no Power. Truck just was missing a little. haven't gotten a Chance to Pull the Valve cover to Find or Prove the problem yet, truck is running good again but I'm not pulling it out of the shop until I get into the valve covers..
It was a pain in the *** to find, But it wasn't the CPS. (now I'm just wishing I could of had ford save me the money on my CPS, instead of me buying it myself...
CPS on my Buddies truck went out and it just Flat wouldn't start Period.

Hey thanks for this post I think that may save me a lot of time and trouble. I replaced mine last week just because i had a new on hand, My truck was running rough, I was about to take a 200 mile trip and figured WTH. It made an unbeliveable improvement in the way it ran.... NO MORE CACKLE. Quite and smooth. Till yesterday on the way home been drizzling for about 10 min.stopped at a light, foot on the brake, reached for the wiper control and all at the same time---the light changed, took my foot off the brake, twisted the wiper control and IT DIED! put it in park and started right up. I'll go home amd check the connection today before I buy a new one.
