Rear end change out

I am looking to change out the rear end in my truck. 77 F250 2x4 with a Dana 60. The reason you may ask is desire for better fuel mileage. The 60 right now has 4.10's in it an the only towing I am worried about is my boat. Any suggestions?

Vital information missing.

How big is the boat?

How large is the tire?

Current mileage VS expected mileage?

Current engine and trans combo?
These trucks are not shy with fuel consumption

if you are concerned with fuel mileage i would go with probably a 3.54 gear if you have a 460 and maybe a 3.73 if a 351 or 400. or maybe keep the 4.10's for towing and add a Gear Vendors overdrive for mileage.

Pulling a 17 foot Tri Hull, motor is a 400, tires are 245/75/16's. I havent sat down with fuel numbers other than watching my gauge. I burn very close to a quarter of a tank on a 20 mile round trip. That is at 55-60 with a bout 2 miles of that being in town. Truck is also a 4spd.

thats about a 30 inch tire. You should be at about 2900 rpm at highway speeds.
should u decide that a 3.5 gear is what you want. that would be almost the same as running a 33 inch tire out back. That would be like a P275-65-16 or there abouts.
See if you can borrow some tires and try this. If you find that it helps then run with it. You can change gears, or find a rear end with the right ratio.
Dont think it will help much. These are large trucks and without a reference with actual mileage, its hard to show any type of improvement.

Thanks, I would love it if I could go good with changing out the tires. I have 285/75/16's on the front now. They were good tires that I picked up used for a very good price. I will throw those on back and see if it helps out some.

Years ago I ran 4.10's. I found a junk truck with 3.54's. I was after better milage too so I just swaped the axles & for just driving around, not highway, I only gained 1 mpg.
