Removing Airpump for power

I was told that on some cars you can remove the airpump and pick up some power and MPG. Would that work n a 5.0 in a '90 F-150. If so, any one have any instruction on how to bypass things?

get a delete pulley and rip off your cat and plug the ports in the back of your heads with 5/8ths bolts and get rid of all associated vacuum lines

But it will not give any more noticeable power as the pump uses almost no power from the engine.

untill you wind your motor out to around 7500rpms or so then the parasitic drag does start to rob more power than you would think

a stock 5.0 makes power till about 4k and an aod shifts a stock 5.0 at 4k-4500rpms but inorder to get good h/p numbers out of a 5.0 since it is a really really small v8 you have to spin the crap out of them and with the short stroke they have at 7500rpms your piston speed (in feet per second) isn't as high as say a 572 motor with a long stroke where for one rotation of the crank the piston has to travel a longer distance than with a 5.0

If its in good functioning order, leave it alone........It does not rob enough power to notice.

If its making noise or otherwise non-functional, theres your excuse to remove it.

Sounds like the consensus is to let it be till it blows up. And yes, I rarely take that thing over 3500 rpm. I'm not sure mine would hold up.

I didn't want to mess with getting a bypass pully for the air pump on my 4.9L I6... I couldn't just get a shorter belt because where it crossed the origional pump position would rub the belt... any how... You can do one of 3 things with the air pump... take it off and all vacuums and weld the pipe shut with 5/8 bolt (already suggested). Leave it alone (if there isn't a problem don't fix it!) You would be better off gaining more power through a K&N air filter! The 3rd is taking off the pump... gutting it and using it as a replacement pully and still taking off the rest of the associated vacuum lines out. also if it is broke or stuck (which mine was) you have a 4th option... I didn't want to pay the $130 or whatever outrageous price it was for a new one! Since they are only a mechanicle pump... If you are careful... you can take them apart and lube them up good so they work like new! then just put it back in...

I wouldn't remove it either. There is really nothing to be gained on the stock setup by doing this. Also, If you still have cats leave you need to leave it on. From what I understand the cats will go bad without it.

If you had a modified setup with a high RPM engine, then I would have a different opinon.

I used to run a short belt on my mustang to eliminate the smog pump. I did notice a power difference with the short belt and under drive pulleys but thats because the pump was completely toast i think.

I would probably leave it if it still works but if you are dead set on it here is a quick way of eliminating it.

I looks like you are running the WP backwards in two or three of the drawings.
Is this your power savings, no water pumping?

I printed the drawing off and drew arrows on it. It looks like the crank is clock-wise and the water pump counter clock-wise on all drawings. It appears these options are all viable.
