Recently picked up an 82 f150, shortbed, stepside with a 300 and a SROD 4 speed. The SROD is bad and currently not in the truck. I had another forum going the other week about the swap to an NP435. I just had one last question, from everything I was reading it looks like the NP435 will bolt up to my NP208 transfer case, but I just wanted to make sure, will it bolt up to the NP208 ok? If everything looks good, I'll pick up this tranny soon and start the swap
Also looked up my axle code, H62, apparently its limited slip front and rear with 3.5 gears. I have 33x12.5's on the truck right now, I'm hoping it will turn em ok.
All of these trucks share the same transfer case to adapter bolt patterns, so you are fin there. Since it is a 4 speed, you wont have u-joint clearance issues. (autos are a diffrent story of the 205 case is used.)
Anyway, since you will have some driveshaft mods to make anyway, is there a reason why you would want to keep the aluminum 208? Other than having a better low range ratio is this the case that you want to keep?
Most of the time these swapa also include the installation of the desirable and bullet proof Np205.
You could kill several birds with one stone here.
I only mentioned driveshaft mods because I speculate that the transmission dimensions are diffrent. I have no clue and no data. I might be full of hot air, but If I were upgrading for strength, I might consider the 205 as well.

You will love the supoerior ratios of the 435.
I am on a tight budget, I am not sure what transfer case it is bolted to, I can take a look when I go pick it up. The truck its coming out of is an 87. Do you know if there would be any crossmember modification needed?

At 65 you will turn 2316, just about right.
The low first will cover you for hills and loads, but most of the time you will do 2nd gear starts.
That's some precise input! I am mainly gonna use the truck as a light trail rig, but I still want to be able to drive to and from trails easily.
It'll work as long as it's from a 4x4 truck, and comes with the correct bellhousing. The 2wd NP435s of course did not have an adapter to bolt to the transfer case.

It's from a 4x4 so we are in good shape there! Just have to settle on a price with this guy and then I'll go pick it up. One quick question, how do you tell the difference between an np205 and an np203 if they don't have the tags on them?
I started looking for an np205 t case after it was mentioned I might want to swap that in as well. I found one on craigs but the guy isn't sure what it is as it doesn't have a tag on it.
They made the 205 and 203 for Chevy and Dodge as well, those both drop on the wrong side.
I never broke my 208 with a built 300, auto, and 35s, so you should be ok. What killed mine was miles, it wore through the shift collar, snagged the snap ring, and shot it out the side of the case while doing 65 towing a trailer. Not a fun day, got to change cases in a rest stop in Michigan City, IN. and the only junkyard in town charged me $175 for the new one.
If you replace the hi-low shift fork you won't have this problem.
Thats a Borg Warner 1345. Aluminum body, chain driven case.
Ah, the search continues. I am going to pick up the transmission sometime this weekend when I am not working, along with the front driveshaft. Ill get some pics and all that good stuff up when the whole project gets underway.
Got the NP435 home the other day, just had a silly question. Is there a gasket that you need for the transmission to transfer case mating surface? I was wondering should i use some make-a-gasket or is it even necessary?
Thanks man! I am gonna start putting the whole thing together tomorrow hopefully if I have the time. I think I wanna sand down the Tcase and the Tranny and hit them with some paint first though.
