Well you could take the engine out or you could cuss, cut your hands all up and try it with the engine in. There's not a whole lot of room under the hood and taking the cab off is way easier. So yes that is the main option that people take.

Its by far the easiest way yes. It can be done in the truck but its a PIA. Or pull the engine.

You could also jack up the cab a bit if you don't have a lift to get the extra clearance.

How does one do this? I mean what are the steps in jacking up the cab, and by how much? Does one place wood blocks between the frame and cab after the lift, to keep it there untill the job is done? Tell me more please.

Haven't ever seen steps for it, its just something I've thought about since I don't have a lift. Jack it up, disconnect/remove anything that needs for clearance. How far? Enough to do the job. Wood blocks would be good for safety. I'd remove the radiator support frame bolts and the front cab bolts, then loosen the rear bolts byt leave them in place so it can't fall off or slide into the box.

Alot of people lift the cab but when I did my stud install lifting the body on an X was not a pleasent thought. One of my local Ford dealers removes the HVAC unit to do HG replacements. Says it is a peice of cake. Not sure I would be that enthusiastic about it.

If you do a search for "DSMMH" and go to the April 09 timeframe of my posts you will see a write up I did replacing the OEM head bolts with studs without changing the HGs or removing the cab, motor or HVAC unit.

If you are going to do the HGs using my write up, I would suggest you do everything the same except I would do the driver side HG replacement first then tilt the motor to do the passenger side. You will probably need two people to lift those puppies out and back in.

I think he is talking about replacing the headgaskets. He didn't say anything about swapping bolts for studs, although that would be something I would do if he is there to swap gaskets.

This makes me think, the other day I had a trailblazer body off the frame for engine replacement, customer came in to get some stuff out of the vehicle and thought they were gonna have a heart attack when they saw there car LOL

I have seen an excursion body off the frame for gaskets, looked scary lol

If you're in there, do studs, the stock headbolts aren't strong enough. Studs are just $385 and its cheap insurance.

Getting the head out is not the issue. It is removing the last 3 lower head bolts next to the fire wall to allow you to remove the head that is the issue. Unless you remove the motor or the HVAC unit or the cab or do it the way I did, the passenger side head will not come out.

CARTMANEA is right. If you are not going to stud the motor, you might as well keep what you have. Down the road you will have the same problem again unless you drive the truck like a granny. As you can see from my mods, I drive my X like I do my ZO6.

Are your HGs totally gone or is it just puking? Mine started with minor puking that was caused by a clogged EGR cooler. Then it got worse. By using an Exhaust Gas Detector Kit, I was able to detect a little exhaust gas in the coolant tank. That meant it was show time. I just removed the stretched OEM head bolts one at a time and replaced them with studs and did not change the HGs. I also installed the Neal Tech. upgraded EGR cooler while I had the motor apart.

Something to think about!
