ok im trying to get my gages to work and im starting with my oil light. i have a 59 f100 292. were is the oil sending unit i cant find it i looked in my manual and it said it should be in front of my oil filter but i cant find it. i found the wire i think. and is my tempature sending unit on my intake manifold in the back left.
.. Gauge and light use a diff oil pressure sender.
Are you sure about that?
It seems to me Number Dummy Bill posted a response once that said the units were the same for lights and gauges. However, this may have been on a different year.
I think so (old memory), on a gauge unit the sender uses a variable pyrometer (resistor) [not sure of the terminology, so I just made that up!! ] in the sender unit so as to tell the gauge what to read (show), like a gas gauge, in a light it’s just a spring loaded (pre-set) off or on switch, right? USUALLY the gauge sender as big and fat (like me) and the light senders are smaller.
what does it look like cause i cant see any thing that looks like an oil sending unit. it cant be off of it and not leaking can it?
Sure! The original hole could be plugged with a bolt or brass plug. Normally the sending units are electric. Someone may have put in a mechanical oil pressure gauge that they hooked up at another oil port, or just removed the electric sending unit.
Normally they are located near the oil filter or on the oil filter mounting ring. It should be about 3/4 to 1" in diameter and about 1 to 1 1/4 inches tall, and shaped a little like a bell or an upside down dixie cup. It will have a little pin sticking out of th etop of it that a wire clips onto. On the block (flat) side it will have a threaded shaft about 3/8 inch in diameter with fine threads.
I'll see if I can find a picture of the one I have.
Edit Note: This one is off a 239 and is more "squat" than most, but they are basically the same-yours may be a little skinnier and taller.
I do not have a flat bed scanner (or the 10 year old to run it) and my parts book only goes to 54, so this a poor picture of a picture, not sure if you will be able to see # 9278.
