Unpluged

I'v seen alot of talk about EGR's, I'm new to Diesels so here is my question. Is it ok to just unplug the EGR valve so that it doesn't work or do you have to remove the complete system? Does it help with clogging to just unplug the valve? Thanks.

This method is good if you are diagnosing a problem and for those of us that have the earlier 6.0L we can just unplug the EGR. Unplugged does not eliminate the feed from the exhaust to the EGR cooler.

Eliminating the exhaust up pipe feed to the EGR cooler is good, a complete EGR delete is the best.

So are you saying it IS better to have it unplugged on 03 and early 04s? So much talk about this my head is I thought one of the techs said it is better for it to be plugged in unless you have cooler deleted or at least blocked i.e. sneaky pipe? I like the mpg with it unplugged, + 2 over plugged in, hiway.

Not exactly what I said but, 03 and early 04 owners can unplug with no warning light going off. Unplugged is OK but you have not eliminated the flow to the EGR cooler of hot exhaust gasses.

When you try to accelerate and the truck bucks, surges, sneezes and blows a plume of black soot out the tail pipe. Simply shut the truck off, unplug the EGR, then hammer it. That will tell you if the EGR is inoperable or sticking.

Off and unplugged, does not exactly say closed in every situation.

I know it won't throw a light but it was something with the Nox at hiway /cruising speed that wasn't good for it. I was more worried about the VGT and the vanes getting frozen in one position. Maybe I'll just leave it alone until I have the time and funds to pull the cooler and weld it shut.

If you have access to a mig welder it's easily done with almost nothing but a small piece of exhaust pipe to use as "filler" material.

I do, but its at a good friends father-in-laws, he has a nice set-up with a lift in his fairly large garage. He lets us use it when we need to tackle larger projects or just when the weather is un-cooperative. But we're getting dangerously close to archery season here, so it will just have to wait a bit longer With the Obamaconomy the way it is, I may be laid off this winter for the first time in 8-10 years, seasonally not permanent. That would provide me with some time, eh?

Yeah......that's a GOOD wintertime project to kill a few beers and some time with, especially if you have access to a shop. The other thread with pic's of the sneaky pipe are the best way to go so you don't have to worry about the flex joint cracking, but you need the EGR cooler connecting flange from the up-pipe to make a cap for the EGR cooler.

I recently had to have the oil cooler replaced, it was plugged by the casting sand. At the same time I had a new egr cooler put in but it now has a freeze plug welded in the inlet so no exhaust flow at all. Everything looks stock and even with the egr valve connected no exhaust into the manifold. Truck runs great and no more burping from the degas. Also installed a coolant filter so no more circulating junk in the coolant. No cel light so far and not sure about any codes being set.
