How do I get the cannister off the fuel pump ro replace the filter? A tool? I can get it off with water pump pliers but I am afraid of distorting the case.

I also have an inline filter between the fuel pump and carb. Should this be removed when I replace the filter element in the cannister?

 

Try one of those oil filter band wrenches. Having too filters won't hurt any thing but probably not needed.

an old leather belt works wonders as an oil filter wrench

 

Also an old fan belt. slide over the filter housing than put a long bar or 3/8th exstention in it also and twist it up till it's tight. this should give ya the grip and leverage ya need to get it off. You can put leather or a heavy rag around it at the threads and try yer big pliers without leaving teeth marks in the housing or crushing it.
