The refiners had a bit of a learning curve in the beginning. Things have gotten much better since.

Blanket statements about ULSD killing pumps/inj's are generally false. Most that reported problems were running on worn components, failure was prolly eminent in the near future anyway. The ULSD is slippery enough for virtually all diesels. Although there are benefits of running an additive. Especially for old mechanical diesels designed 15-20 years ago for 1500 PPM fuel.

Again, Sulfur has little effect on lubricating. It's the process of refining the sulfur out that cracks the fuel, and takes some of the lubricating properties with it.

If a person took a little time, and did some research on the matter, a lot of these web falsehoods could be eliminated.

No matter how much I read about it, I can't bring myself to put anything but fuel in my fuel tank. I run Power Service Diesel Kleen and that's it. Go ahead and hit me with the "don't waste your money on snake oil" discussion. As long as I think it works, then it's worth it for me (I never claimed to be a smart man). After all, I have a big truck that gets crappy fuel economy, leaks oil and costs an arm and a leg to maintain...AND I LOVE IT!!!!! I've gotta have a screw loose somewhere (at least that's what my wife keeps telling me)!

I thought about running bio-diesel, but it's hard to come by and Ford doesn't recommend anything more than B5 for the 7.3.

I agree with the diesel kleen I just ran my first tank down with a 40 gal concentration through 29 gallon tank. I immediately noticed a quicker start, very slight and smoother idol, and all around good feel for the stuff. I used the cetane boost blend in the grey bottle.

Ford doesn't recommend anything more than B5 for the 7.3.
Ford doesn't recommend a lot of things people here do. Is it B5? I thought it was only B2, but the more I think about it, B5 sounds right. I've been running it in my truck for over 2 years now with no ill effects. Not even a plugged FF. But then again, it is readily available around here where I live. It is an automated facility-24hr- that a local fuel company around here runs, and they have 3 stations within 15 or 20 miles from me.

Bio is not available in my area unless I make it. I do not have the facilities to do that now. I went to that site and read the reaport. I just do not understand it. I read the damn thing (results) three times. Still trying, after reading that report, to figure out what I need to add to my fuel.

I checked with the supplier of the blue dye fuel. He told me that it is from BP at 500 ppm and he has to special order it from Louisana. He then adds additional additives to bring up up above 900 for the mine. I did find out something else. Their equipment has to run special cats to burn that fuel. I guess that is cheaper than replacing millions of dollars of equipment

The report is formatted with the better additives towards the top. They get worse as You go down the page. I run Shaeffer Diesel Treat 2000

There was a test done a few years ago where someone had a lab test (using the ASTM D-975 HFRR) lubricity of various "additives" fpr diesel fuel and Biodiesel came out on top as the most effective for increasing lubricity.....If I remember correctly, even 2-stroke oil was better than ATF/Hyd oil....

ATF was way down low on the list as was other hydraulic oils. I still don't understand why there are still some who think any hydraulic oil is ok in a diesel.

All hydraulic fluids and ATF's contain additives that were NEVER intended to be burned in a combustion chamber.

If you take your "under warranty" diesel to a dealer with a fuel system problem that could be covered.....it will NOT be covered when they find out you ran ATF or other hydraulic oil in the fuel.....

Why not just run the approved additives or even non-detergent 10w oil?

There are only three reasons to add anything to our fuel, one is for antigel in the winter months and there are several good products for that. Cetane boost is another and again there are sveral good products for that. The last is cleaning the injector and fuel system and the best for that is stanadyne and diesel kleen, either one is a good product with the diesel kleen being more commonly found.
If you don't trust the lubricant boosters added by the fuel suppliers the cheapest way out is to run some biodiesel. After that I would consider useing 2 stroke oil as an additive.

I was a bit over cautious when I got the diesel and have run either diesel Kleen or Howes Lube in it every tank. I have been running various concentrations of bio too. (mixed in the tank).

I do believe the additives improve MPG, but have no proof since I have always used something. Now that it's getting cooler out I have Howes Diesel Treat for the antigel ready for the next tank.

Hello Guys! Just readin' your thread. Question, Has anyone heard of "Stanadyne"? I've been using their "Lubricity Formula" in my tractor. Anyone with knowledge of that brand? Some of the fuel I've been using is kinda "dry". That's why I use an additive

stanadyne is a supplier of rebuilt injection pumps and also has the lubricity product your refering to.they make it in anti-gel for cold weather use and a higher cetane warm weather product. both highly rated.

Well, I guess I have found my answers. I will continue use of Dieselclean (white and gray), add a little antigel for the winter, and add a little two-stroke.

I have heard that the gooberment is going to take all of the sulphur out next year. Our 7.3's will die without a little.

I have not heard of any plans to reduce sulphur in ULSD from the presant 15 ppm max level.
Our seven T444Es/7.3s and prior emission engines are doing fine on the ULSD and we don't use any fuel additives.

I use 2 stroke wally world super tech tcw-3 ashless oil. It makes a big noise difference. Truck is quieter and runs smoother similar to running b100. I run 32oz to a tank or 1oz to a gallon. Which would put it at the top of the lube study at twice as much. I also use diesel kleen but only once or twice every couple of months as a cleaner only since it strips away lubrication.
