Luv it. If you haven't screwed up with a wrench it because you don't own one.... So true. When the wife gets on me occasionally I just tell her I can best quit making mistakes by not doing anything.....

You got that right BareBones. The only person that hasn't made a mistake working on their vehicles are the ones that don't work on em.

I think that's a spin-off of the 'ol "people that dont have marriage problems aren't married" one...

But I agree, sheesh guys, give him a break, at least he's man enough to admit he screwed up...

Se77vn, hope you had a great weekend camping after fixing your oops.

What does driving have to do with changing fluids??

I always subscribed to the theory that if you can't do very basic maintenance on a multi thousand dollar vehicle, and do not understand the most simple of procedures outlined in the manual, you really shouldn't be driving said vehicle.

Look at it another way, if they can't find out how to pour slush into a tranny, how can you expect them to figure out the safest way to drive their vehicle in traffic and potential emergency situations?

While I agree that having a basic understanding of vehicle maintenance is important, it's hardly critical to safe operation of the vehicle.

For that matter, the OP demonstrated basic knowledge by attempting the job himself, as well as recognizing that red fluid is NOT engine oil!

Most people can't do that anyway! Has nothing to do with whether or not they know how to maintain a vehicle.

We had this guy that came into my dad's shop once because he thought he was running low on oil. The guy had checked his oil numerous times only to see that it still looked low. So he put in quart after quart after quart until oil started gushing out of the engine. He had been checking the tranny dipstick the whole time. One of our mechanics got him in, changed the oil (and cleaned what he could), and topped off the trans fluid for him. And the guy's wife is screaming at him and just tearing him a new one.

The OP had a minor foul up. It's easier to mess things up when rushing around and this it not a big deal since he caught himself in the act. And most people don't know that the trans fluid is added through the dipstick. I mean oil isn't added through the dipstick.

There is another lesson here - don't leave your vehicle maintenance until the last hour before a long trip. Doesn't matter whether you are doing it yourself, or having a pro do it, get it done a couple weeks before you leave, and if any problems arise you have a chance of getting them fixed.

I know, sometimes life gets in the way. And some folks are just procrastinators, and doing something in advance just isn't in their DNA.
