i'm looking for a cam that will give me a lopey idle, and a bit more power. However i want to retain the factory exhaust, intake, and YFA carb.... for now
how well would either one of these work? which one would work best? Thanks...
the 268 will give you a noticeable idle and a good bit of mid-range power. but i would suggest getting the intake and exhaust done first. the stock cats are crap and the engine being able to breath is one of the biggest things in performance. you wont really notice the power or the idle if the engine cant breath.
The head is the choke point in these engines. A mild port/polish/port match is recommended as the first order of business otherwise one does not get the full advantage of a cam or any other modification.
The cheap way for a little more cam breathing & timing is to swap your stock rockers for stock 1.7:1 ratio big block Chevy rockers. Bolts right on. I don't think you even need to change pushrods. But your choke points really are the intake & exhaust. Stock 1BBL motors don't make power much past 2500RPM. The EFI motors, with the same cam (IIRC) and better breathing make good torque to 3500RPM and a little beyond. Anymore and you need to port 'n polish like Harte3 said.

This is the Comp 268. It's pretty unlikely you'll be able to notice much lope if it's all stock exhaust. The 252 will give a stock / smoooth idle.
eventually i want clifford intake, holley 4bbl, efi's, and dual exhaust with hush thrush mufflers run straight out the back....but it'll be a bit at a time as money allows. Parents are wanting a christmas list so i put a cam kit on it
