If the coil is getting burning hot, then there is a problem. They will get warm after awhile, but they shouldn't get so hot that it'll burn you.

Might just be a bad coil. If you are worried about it take it back & grab another.

For that year truck with a 300 you should have a round coil with a duraspark 2 module on the left fender wheel well.

The coil positive voltage at idle should be less than battey voltage, around 8-10 volts or so, the reading will depend on the type of meter used.

If the voltage is almost the same on the coil + as across the battery you have found the reason why the coil is running hot.

Ford used a "resistor wire" to drop the coil voltage in the "run mode".

It might be easier to just add another ballast resistor if you are currently running full voltage to the coil.

Do you have a starter solenoid with 2 large and 2 small connections?
The 2 small connections are marked…

"I" is for the Ignition coil positive
"S" is for the Starter connection

First step is to check current coil voltage at idle.

let me know what you find..... Jim
