Got a 2000 EB expy approaching 250k miles. Not sure how much longer she will hold up. Ironically, I am needing something bigger and would love an Excursion. Ideally it would be 2wd, diesel and 200-2006 model year.
Would love any suggestions, tips, warnings, etc on what to look for. (I will continue to search the forum for similar posts too)

The 2006 Excursions went to Mexico, if you want one, go get it.
Let's get this party started. Up though the middle of the X run you could get the 7.3 diesel, after that it was the 6.0. Read up on both and see which one suits your needs, which if we knew those needs it would help with the suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

1st Pick: 2003 7.3 Diesel would be my 1st pick!!! Good luck finding one of those! If you do buy the thing like ASAP, becasue it won't last long!
2nd Pick: 2005 6.0 Diesel Ex. If you find one with a clean Oasis report buy it!
3rd Pick: 2005 V-10, mpg's aren't the greatest and they are down on power compared to Diesels but they are cheaper than a Diesel and less money to maintain. There are lots of Diesel vs. V-10 threads in this forum. Do some looking and you will see!
The 7.3 is a really great engine. It's very reliable and proven to run 300K-400K miles and sometimes more!! If I had it to do all over again I'd buy one in a heartbeat!! They have less power than the 6.0 but who cares if you hardly ever have to put it into the shop for repairs!! Good luck searching for one!!

I think this is about a pretty accurate reasoning.
Thats about the order I would look for also. I have a 2000 Diesel with 200K no problems at all with it. I would love to get a newer one but the $$$ it would take to trade offsets knowing what I have. I know where I can get a 2005 Limited diesel rollover cheap & I have a 2000 5.4 gas I could use to build it with but man thats alot of work!!
My advice.....If you go with a 7.3l, when you find the vehicle you want buy it ASAP. I looked for four months before I found the one I wanted that fit my budget. I looked at a few and went home to think about it and they were gone the next day. 7.3l trucks seem to be getting fewer and fewer on autotrader and more expensive.
I ended up with a 2000 7.3l Limited, 160k miles, 2WD. I love it! 20+MPG on the highway, room for the kids and assorted junk and pulls my travel trailer way better then my Nissan did!
ash flat diesel Sounds like you found the PERFECT set up. Rolled 05 diesel and you have a good 5.4 body. "IF" the mechanics are sound on the 05 are sound just do a body swap. You would be amazed at how easy the job would be once you have done one.
Last one I did was only a three day project. 89 7.3l diesel 4x4 tree fell on cab and a little rusty $1000. 91 2wd gas engine motor junk $900, rust free texas truck. I now have a awesome rust free diesel 4x4 for less than $2500.
Of course if you don't have the shop or some experience I can understand.
I have an 04 6.0 with quad captains chairs. I searched for months with these as my requirements before I found one. It was an ideal vehicle for me, and I upgraded from my 98 Expedition 5.4litre. I drove almost 200 miles to get it too. Research, discover exactly what you want, and don't accept anything less.
I am just finnishing up a cab swap on a 2006 F350. I have a 2 post lift that I havent installed yet, I think that would make the excursion swap easier. If anybody wants a project I can hook you up!
Like has already been said, if you find one you like buy it on the spot. I was searching for a while before I found mine and it took a while not because I'm picky but when I found one I liked it was already. They last maybe a day or two in a place like Houston. The diesel excursions are in extremely high demand!

Wonder why I couldn't sell mine if they are in such high demand. Tried for 6 months and gave up. Had only 2 people look at the truck in that amount of time. I know I wasn't priced to high because it was the cheapest diesel EX within 200 miles on Autotrader. Must be location??????

I think this might have been because gas and diesel went up to $4.50 and trucks and other "gas guzzlers" were tanking. I know when I was looking for an Ex in 05, I could have one without leaving town but in the 6.0. For the 7.3 I had to go 6 hrs away.
