Think I have a oil pan gasket leak

So I'm down in Louisville at an Days Inn tonight and just noticed i have an oil leak. Whipped out the mag light and determined the leak is coming from the oil pan gasket just below the crankcase pully for the serpentne belt. I will have to just check the oil periodically cause I wont be home until next Monday.

My question is this, and i pray the answer is yes...Can I replace this gasket without pulling the motor?

It may be a front crank seal, easier to fix than a pan gasket.
If it turns out to be a pan gasket.....you either pull the engine or cut the cross member to get the oil pan off. Here's a link to the cross member I cut out:

I agree. replace the front seal first and say a prayer.

Thanks guys for the insite. Is the front seal more common to fail?

I'm thinking it is the front seal. the leak is right at the front of the oil pan.

Anyone have a link on how to replace the front seal?

I was told by my ford guru if you disconnect the motor mounts and hoist the motor up while it is still in the truck carefully 3 inches there will be enough room to pull the pan out. I would like to know if it will work.

The front seal is not a known problem but they do go bad.

Factory service manual online:

thanks Jim for the links. For now, I'm going to just make sure I keep enough oil in it until I can get home. It's been an adventurious trip so far...noticed oil leak... and my vaccum pump went out today - almost making me mow over a car when my brakes suddenly got rock hard.

I still dont have it back together. I couldn't use my old pulley as it's worn out. So I have to wait until tomorrow morning to get one from the local dealership.

Yep I'm officailly stranded away from home. Hopefully i'll be good to go tomorrow morning though...

The turbo needs to come off to raise the engine 3", then you would have a total of ~3 1/2" clearance. It's doubtful the pan will come off unless the trans is removed too. By the time you've done all that work you might as well pull the engine. The oil Pick-up tube is difficult to maneuver around to get the pan off.

Then there is the issue of installing the pan w/o much clearance....you gotta work fast & clean to get the pan to seal up good. The sealant doesn't like the dripping oil before it's cured.

Ok, back to this problem. I'm going to post some pics of the leak today. I'm really thinking it's the front seal (or at least Im hoping it is).

You will need to get a photobucket account or similiar web based pic hosting site. Then you can link from that site to here. This site will not host your pics unless you make a gallery. You can do that as well.

If you email it to me I will host it for you.

the easiest way is to upload the picture to an online hosting site, such as flickr or photobucket and then paste the image code in there... but ill host if for you.
