I am getting ready to flush my cooling system and change over to Extended Life Coolant (EFC). In researching this I came across the Diesel Site Coolant Filter and I'm considering adding it to my EX. Has anyone installed one? It is supposed to fit behind the radiator and fan housing and in front of the alternator, but that space looks awfully tight on my '03 PSD.
After buying it though, it came to my attention that a lot of what the coolant filter removes from the fluid is SCA fallout from the green coolant.
I have a 2002 F250 with the Gold coolant and I'm going to backflush that stuff out and refill with Chevron Delo ELC (like I did with my Ex) but I won't be adding the coolant filter on my 250.
After reading quite a few threads and posts on this over the three years since I've done the coolant filter install on my Ex, I'm just not convinced it's needed on rigs that have the Gold, or rigs that have been switched over to an ELC.
The primary reason I'll be adding a coolant filter is to get the casting sand and general gunk out of the cooling system and hopefully extend the life of the water pump. It seems to be good enough for over the road diesels to have coolant filters. And the Diesel Site trans filter is looking good too.
I'm not convinced there is casting sand to filter out.
The older 7.3L PSD's that used the green coolant needed to have their SCA levels checked and when needed, additive was added to the coolant. I believe it's this SCA additive fallout that is being filtered out by the coolant filter.
Newer trucks that came with the gold coolant from the factory don't have SCA fallout because the gold doesn't require any additional additive.
As for the long haul diesel truckers, for the amount of abuse, engine run time, and just all around heavy duty wear and tear they put the engine through they probably need the coolant filter.
