I've owned my truck for 4 years and have always had this problem.
Hit the gas and the drivetrain feels like there is play in it. Then it engages hard. When I accelerate from a stop or in motion or the tranny shifts up or down this will occur. When pulling a trailer it is not really there. It's like the extra weight keeps enough backforce in the drivetrain to offset the slop.
It's not the u joints. I've recently replaced them. But I think they wear out faster than normal. Or atleast faster than any other truck i've owned. The tranny shifts nice. I really don't think it's the tranny.
But, I do suspect the transfer case to be the culprit. If i put the truck in neutral and move the drive shaft by hand the t case has a lot of slop in it.
