i posted on competition diesel forum but they cant figure out how to reply so i hope the real idi guys here can help. I am currently wanting to build a sled puller. I have an 87 7.3 idi and i was currious whats the best i can build them. are they capable of large power numbers or am i wipping a dead horse. also i was wondering if anyone out there knows engine weight and specs on a dt360 and dt408 thanks guys
the single most power increasing thing you can do is add a turbo if ya dont have one already. Then get some head studs in there so you can run higher boost. Also i think you can get a Moose pump and injectors to increase power. Also a free flowing exhaust is desireable, seems like 3 inch is the best. Just be careful not to melt your pistons.
i 6.9 is better for a power horse motor thick cildernder walls they can handle more boots and u can bore a stroke a 6.9 not so much a 7.3 oh i think the competition diesel forum foumr is dead i look today no posts
well a turbo is a must and i am considering balancing the rotating assembly but i was wondering is there aftermarket lower compression pistons out there so i can run twins. as for heat i will try to run and aftercooler and water methanol injection. i will of coarse stud the heads. how much boost will it take to lift the heads off the block? i know i can find ways to get the fuel there if it will allow me to cram enough boost. let me know if you have done anything or have heard of anything. thanks again guys.
Sad to say it, but the few IDIs that have run under NADM rules lately have not been competitive. You can run Work Stock and not be too embarrassed, but it's unlikely you can beat any of the newer truck. Might be a little embarrassing in 2.6, but IMHO that's about as high as you could expect to go and not look ridiculous and spend a ridiculous amount of money doing it. Above that class, there's no mods you can make that will make an IDI remotely competitive with a built Cummins, Duramax or Power Stroke- powered truck. There was one guy who tried and that truck quietly faded away after busting the block into bits several times. At least that's what I was told by NADM officials. If you really want to play in the pulling game, swap in a Cummins.
A place were an IDI guy might have better luck is diesel drag racing. The NHRDA's Sportsman ET class is plenty competitive if you can build a very consistent truck. Bee thinking about it myself but I count my spare time in minutes these days
thats kind of what i figured but i thought i would rule the idea out first. from what i found a dta360 has similar bore and stroke to a 5.9 cummins i might try to retrofit some aftermarket forged lower compression pistons into my dta360 and then crank the crap out of it with a second turbo but we will see. it would sure be nice to have some dta360 and dt408 specs before i tear mine down. i should check into the drag racing. we only have one track in minnesota and its quite a drive for me but that would be some real fun. thanks for all your input guys.
Neat video, but irrelevant. All I can say is, try it with the bigboys. Sure, every once in a while the underdog wins or makes a full pull. If you can campaign an IDI to even moderate success in sanctioned pulling, I'll be the first to cheer and eat a crow sandwich. I suggest you name the truck, " Don Quixote"
Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that that engine was not actually pulling hard so much as in a runaway state after the cdr gave up the ghost and it started drinking it's own engine oil, hence bulk power heat and ultimatley damage.
