I checked the threads for this and nothing , 2wd 302 , had steering box replaced by pepboys , it was leaking bad and was warranted , everything worked fine before replacing box . So now steering is tight and never did this before . What would cause this problem ? Fluid is good and at level , the mechanic said not to turn wheels after installing box , just let it sit there for awhile , never heard that before , so after driving for 4 days and checking fluid still tight , could there be air in the line still causing this ? Or a bad steering box . Thanks
The box may have an adjustment on it thats made too tightly from the remanufacturer. I havn't messed with a 2wd like yours, but I know my 4X4 has a set screw lookin thing with a lock nut on it, and thats how you set the bearing load, so if its turned in too far, it would cause the steering to be tight, (too much load on the bearings). Too far out would mean steering would be sloppy(loose bearings). Check for that once but if you mess with it make sure you count your turns so you know how far you went and which way you turned it. Good luck.
sounds like to me some one messed up rebuilding the box, sounds like the seals on the spool valve are damaged.i would go back and have them put on a different box
lol lol don't turn the steering wheel for a few days! lol lol i know why! by the time you bring it in to complain, they don't have to replace the part! "sorry but its been to long, we can't replace it!"
also i am interested as well, how much and what kind of warranty? i live north of the border, or South from Alaska! but i am still interested, also maybe the seals swelled up? who knows? if it was me, i would take it back, sounds like it was not rebuilt right, also what did the core cost?
Contrary to popular belief those gear boxes you buy at the local parts store are not "rebuilt" at all, they're just cleaned, painted and resealed, the parts that wear e.g. spool valve are not replaced, you could go through a dozen or more before you found a good one.
Just got off the phone with Red Head, and they said it would cost me $306 with exchange for my 1976 F-150 4X4 with PS. No shipping charge since I would drive to them.
