Stepside bed question

Stepside bed question
I recently just bought an 82 stepside f150, and just like my 86, this thing has a wooden bottom for the bed. Did they come from the factory like this or is this something that someone did to the truck? I was just curious cause id much rather have metal instead of this flaky plywood.

You can actually put a metal bed floor in it...the previous owner did it to mine. You can get the bed wood on ebay for a few hundred dollars and it doesn't look too hard to put in. I've heard you have to pull the bed off, put the wood in, then put the bed back on...not 100% sure on this though.

You can use the aftermarket wood kits to replace the floor or you can replace it with 3/4" treated plywood. My 84 had the plywood in it when we got it and it held up great, just like the original stuff. The only problem with wood is that it will hold water and rust out the side faster than a metal floor will. Mine is undergoing surgery now to replace the plywood with diamondplate.

As mentioned above. You need to remove the bed to install the new wood.
80-82 used individual pieces of wood. 83-87 uses one piece of marine plywood.
If you are going for show i would do the individual pieces of wood in your choice of wood. If you are going for function, then i would do the marine grade plywood or convert over to a steel floor.
