Im kind of new to this type of truck but a guy offered to trade me his 1965 f100 stepside for my 1983 bronco. I have always been attracted to this type of truck just never learned to much about them cause never thought I would get one. Anyways did the fenders come fiberglass out of the factory(probably a stupid question) if not what could this mean? did the beds come with the wood liner cause this one does. will the title say something like stepside or is there a way to tell if it really is one? my main concern is i dont know if you can convert a regular f100 into a stepside. i want to get an original thats why i ask and my bronco is my baby so i dont want to get screwed over. O yea and its got front disc converson and a 5.0 engine swap with a 4 speed auto tranny and lower gears in the rear. Please help thanks!!!!
I would never swap for a ford truck with a chevy bed attached to it........
Garbz
What do you mean swap a ford with a chevy bed attached? Are you saying that this has the swap or what? Sorry Im confussed... what do yall think of this trade?
I think I get flairside=ford and chevy=stepside... How can you tell if the beds not a ford? It seems like one of my friends metioned that a smaller gap between the rear fenderwell and the top of the truck bed means its a chevy... Is that true?
I doubt it has a Chevy bed. I wish you guys would lay off with the "stepside vs flareside" nonsense because it just confuses newbies.
Click here to see a picture of a truck with a real Ford step...er...flareside bed on it.
Fiberglass fenders (front? rear?) would not be factory original. Of course, neither is the 302 engine in a 61-66 truck, either.
If you post all the data from the VIN plate on the driver's door we can decode what the truck was when it left the factory.
You may also want to click here and read my "What's it worth?" commentary to tell you a bit more about what to look for.
Yea he told me the engine is a older 5.0 mustang engine and the tranny was an old cop car tranny with some overdrive or something like that with lower gears and someother stuff I cant remember. Anyways im gona look at it today hopefully but well see. O yea i was asking about the rear fenders because he said their messed up and need to be patched or replaced.
Something else that no 1 mentioned,,, write down all the info on the door tag "its on the drivers door" and post it in a thread.. All these great guys can decifer the info and tell the way your truck was when it rolled off the factory line.
And Welcome to FTE
GM engines are the one exception to the "anything is ok, since it's your truck" mantra.
There is simply NO EXCUSE for putting a Generic Mediocrity engine in one of these trucks with so many good Ford engines to choose from that fit readily.
And, the one thing nobody thinks about when they do that is selling it...NOBODY will buy it, unless it's at a fire sale price.
I still remember everyone's reaction to the one Slick at the SuperNats...very nicely turned out truck, looked mostly stock...until you looked under the hood and saw that distributor at the wrong end of the engine...everyone who peeked in there suddenly turned on their heel and walked away. The poor guy ended up showing it the rest of the weekend with the hood closed just so people would stop and talk with him.
