So I was cruising along about 60mph, not hauling anything, on 85F day 2 days ago when I notice my tranny temp occassionally going from 140 up to 190 and back. Sometimes it would sit at 190 for a 30 seconds or so. I pulled over and checked the fluid level which was ok. So I crawled under the truck to check wires and connector to the tranny temp sensor. Everything seemed ok. Got back in the truck and continued on. The gauge did not act up any more that day. Then yesterday it started again. This sounds like a bad wiring connection but the wires and connector seem ok. Is there some way it could be "slug" pumping? That is, not pumping enough fluid through the tranny causing the temp to rise and then pumping a slug of fluid through the tranny causing it to cool down?
I had that and it was the gauge. I just replaced my Isspro EV's with Isspro EV 2's. I was getting erratic readings and they were higher(90-100 degrees above ambient unloaded) from what I expected, even when it wasn't erratic. When I put the new EV 2's in, I was running 63-65 degree's above ambient temp unloaded and about 80 degrees loaded heavy with the travel trailer.
With my 7400 TT fully loaded to est. 8000 pounds running up and down the Smoky mountains with my foot in or on cruise and at 90*F, my gauge fluctuated between 160 on flat to as high as 190, never went over that. At one point I was thinking my gauge was bad because it never went over 190, hum. Isspros EV series here. What Jason asked, what are you running??
I still got the ISSPRO's mentioned in my signature. I got them from Diesel Manor and installed them 2 years ago. When it first started happening I would tap on the gauge but it didn't seem to matter. I'll check the connection on the gauges. I might even pull it and test it. I wonder if DM has the current vs. reading curves for it.
You could have a bad sender, there has been some problems in the past, not to long ago. Check it out and give Dieselmanor a call. Its out of warranty but DM has great customer service program.
I have the ISSPRO's also and had the same problem, I called dieselmanor and mine were out of warranty and they gave me the phone no. to ISSPRO. I called them and they said it was probably the control box that the guage and sender plugged into, and I could purchase a new one for a "discounted" price of $75. You can purchase a entire new guage/sender unit for the same price from dieselmanor hmmmmmm. Easy decision there.
