Armstrong steering be gone

Hey guys! I have a quick question.

Would the Power Steering from a 71 1/2 ton work with an 82 f-100? There is a guy around me selling for cheap and I want to get rid of my "armstrong" steering.

I assume you mean that you don't have power steering at all.

Its more than just the pump, you'd need all the steering components since they are completely different systems. And I'm guessing that all the components from 71 straight axle isn't going to work with your TTB.

I have no power steering right now.

Does anyone know the years and makes that fit into an 82?

I guess its more junk yard diving for me.

If i was you i would look for a 80-86 w power steering. If it is the same engine, take all the brackets and it will be a simple bolt on. No other years are a direct bolt on. The steering box you need is from 80-96F150 +97 f250-350
Also the ranger from 83-91 has the same steering box

A tip: If at all possible, get a friend or two to help you put the new steering box in. It -can- be done by one person, but it's not a fun experience. It makes a world of difference having someone to hold the box from above while you guide it from below and bolt it in.

If I may suggest, you might do some research on Saginaw pump setups for your truck. I've heard they put out more pressure and are quieter. Though I run a stock Ford PS pump and it's almost silent.

I'm rebuilding this truck for my fiance's son. So you can bet his butt will be helping!

What are all the parts of a PS system that I have to make sure I have.
pump
steering box
and hoses?

I just put in an 81 300 IL6 to replace the dead engine in it. The 81 has a power steering bracket on it. I can assume this bracket wont work with whatever pump I get and I will need to get the bracket with it?

are saginaw an after market pump? Do you know who might have them?

Thanks for all the replies!

He is a beefy boy so he shouldn't have a problem!

The reason I am thinking of doing the conversion at all is that the wheel has about 3"-4" of play in it. Its either replace that worm or go PS.

I found a guy parting out an 86 f150. It has the 5.0 302 in it and our truck has the 4.9 300 .

Will the power steering pull out and play on that? Would it be a good idea to take the column also? The one I have is ripped up a bit from a bubba conversion from the 3 on the tree to a floor shifter.

Thanks guys!

According to the part website I was just looking at the Pump, Bracket and steering box had the same part numbers for both the 300 and the 302.

That's great to know about the bracket. Thanks

Update

I spoke with him again and he said he would sell me the whole truck for $500.00

He says the engine runs "alright" and just needs a new carb. I just put in a 300 with only 65000 miles on it into the 82 I have so I dont want his "alright" 5.0

I looked at the parts I want out of it.

Power steering -<o></o>
Steering Column – <o></o>
Steering wheel – <o></o>
Instrument Panel - <o></o>
Tail gate - <o></o>
Rear brake lens - <o></o>
ac compressor/blower - <o></o>
center radio plate - <o></o>
Gas gauge sender unit -<o></o>
Wheels/tires - <o></o>
shroud - <o></o>
rear view mirrors –<o></o>
Power locks – <o></o>
Power windows – <o></o>
Etc.<o></o>
Etc.

It all adds up... What do you guys think? Just buy it part it and scrap it? Or pull what I want and leave it his problem.

Thanks again!<o>

If you have the dough, I say get the whole truck. And that 5.0 could be fine aside from just needing a tuneup, and you might end up having a use for it someday.

Another couple tips:

- If you have to remove the high-pressure hose from the PS pump, remove the SMALL fitting, not the large one it's connected to on the side of the pump. I made this mistake, and it allowed the little piston inside the pump to stick out and keep me from putting the large fitting back in.

- The fittings on the high pressure hose are kind of a soft metal, so watch out for rounding-off of corners on the fittings. A new hose is around $15, so you might just pick one of those up instead of fooling with the original.

- On my truck's 302, someone removed the upper AC compressor bracket, and put five flat washers in its place as spacers. It works fine, but it was a pain to get back together. If the top (pivot) bolt doesn't go into the hole in the cylinder head when you try with just a wrench, try gently tapping the head of the bolt with a hammer while turning the bolt with a wrench.

- When mounting the PS steering box to the frame, spray the bolts and the bolt holes on the box itself with carb cleaner or B12. It'll remove all the dirt and crud and make it easier to get the bolts in. Also watch out for crossthreading.

Sorry about the life story :P

I'm going to buy it.

I told him I would buy it if he towed it to my house (5 miles away) so he is even going to tow it over!

He says that the engine was actually rebuilt before but sat for 5 years. It seems the engine problem is the carburetor. I have a 4 barrel holly sitting on a 390 that I'm not using... maybe it will work?

I was looking at autozone and they say that this year only had a 5.8 with carb a 5.0 with fuel inject and a 6 with carb... So what it is I dont know. Might not be the original engine after the rebuild. or it might be the 5.8

No need to be sorry for a life story! I enjoy the info and the story. Lord know I can use all the instruction I can get.

Well.

The first truck may not work out. The guy has been selling parts off of in the interim...

I found an 84 f250 for the same price. Would the parts be pretty much as interchangable? Can I take the PS out of it? I may just keep the truck though...

If it runs!

Someone must know! I am going to look at the truck in 2 hours I need to know if the 250 parts are similar enough to work in a 100?

Thanks
