My truck had a bunch of play in the steering too, the same setup as yours. You just need to tighten the sector adjustment shaft. If you have a repair manual for the truck, it tells you what to do in the steering section.
Thanks for the responses guys. I checked out the truck and he said it has some problems.
First it wont start... He replaced the ignition and it still wouldn't start. But he said that if he connects the points on the solenoid that it turns over. Is the solenoid just bad and if I replace it should it start up? I think it wasnt starting because its a stick and the clutch wasnt in? Maybe he didnt have the key turned to start in the ignition? Any ideas?
I havent bought the truck yet. There just arent enough parts on it that I can exchange to make it worth 500 for me. But if I can get it running and driving with a new solenoid... Maybe I will just keep it for myself and rebuild it!
He already replaced the ignition switch but it didnt seem to fix the problem. The engine doesnt turn over from the key, only from the solenoid.
Sorry to keep reusing the same post. Well more on my saga...
I bought an 84 f150 for parts. pulled off the powersteering system, put it on the 82 and nothing happened... The steering is still REALLY manly. I have jacked up the front and turned lock to lock for at least a half hour and still the power steering isn't working at all. Not even intermittently Could I have a bad pump? The belt is tight and everything installed correctly.
Pretty sure. I thought I had it on the same way that it was on the other truck but I will try switching them and i'll update. This truck has been one odd problem after another!
I don't think you can put the hoses on backwards....if I recall, the fittings are each a different size. Plus, one of the high pressure lines has a bend in it that prevents it from fitting any other way than the correct way.
There's a low pressure line running from the back of the pump to a metal line that goes down along the front of the engine crossmember, then back up to the steering box. Make sure it doesn't have any leaks anywhere along that line, especially if someone's cut on it and replaced any sections with rubber hose.
BTW, is the pump noisy? Try taking the belt off and spinning the pump pulley with your hand. See if you notice any looseness or noise.
If i was you i would look for a 80-86 w power steering. If it is the same engine, take all the brackets and it will be a simple bolt on. No other years are a direct bolt on. The steering box you need is from 80-96F150 +97 f250-350
Also the ranger from 83-91 has the same steering box
+1 on the years ... I just built an 82 F100 up from a bunch of parts for an 84 F150 ... the only difference I saw:
... the 82 has a "one loop of steeling tubing" fluid cooling system ...
So that loop of metal tubing that goes down along the engine crossmember from the pump, then back up to the steering box is there to cool the PS fluid?
Interesting, I've wondered what that line was for. I almost bypassed it when I was replacing my steering box (and pump....long story), as I was replacing old lines. Fortunately I decided to leave it alone. :P
