Hello all, I noticed when driving home on friday that I had a squeeking/rattling sound comming from the left front wheel area only when I was accellerating. When I got home I checked everything out and could not find the noise. When I drove it next i put it in 4x4 and the noise went away but it didn't go into 4x4. Just wondering if anyone has had a problem like this. Could the bearing/hub assembly be the problem. I have never messed with the 4 wheel drive systems on these trucks so i don't know if that could be the proble. I have a 2006 F-150. ext cab with a 5.4. Any help would be appreciated.
Sure, we can help! Search this forum for 'IWE System' and be ready to read for a while. This is a common problem for 04-06 F150s.
From my experience, You have two problems.
1. Your vacuum check valves that keep the hubs DISENGAGED. are not working properly.
2, Either the IWE solenoid, or the transfer case motor is bad, and is the cause for the No 4x4 problem. (I think in your case, you may have a bad t-case motor, because the noise at your left front stops when you turn the dial. That indicates that your IWE solenoid is working, i.e, it released vacuum and engaged the hubs.)
Read up, Lots of us have already worked though this problem. If your mechanically inclined, the fixes are relatively easy.
Thanks for the help, I found that the passenger side actuator was leaking and not holding vacuum which in turn was causing the drivers side to slightly engage causing the grinding sound. I just replaced both actuators and the updated switch and it works fine now. Thanks again
Im so glad that my article is helping so many out.
Your article armed me with the knowledge I needed to speak intelligently with the service tech that worked on my truck. Going in knowing what was wrong and what it would take to fix it made me confident that I wouldn’t be screwed over.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS ARTICLE!!
