2004 Excursion! Ford can't figure it out

I've taken my excuriosn in 5 times to see why it's surging. It does it while stopped at a light and when I'm traveling down the road. What I mean is that the rpm's shoot up then down real quick. Sometimes at a traffic light after surging it will die. Any thoughts?

Might help to tell us what engine it has and what the dealership has done so far.

I would take it to another dealer since none of them have an answer and might not have one for another month. 2 heads are better than 1 and 4 are 4 times as good.

Hey, just guessing, assuming you have a diesel.

It is probably the IPC (Injection Pressure Control) solenoid. Probably needs replacement. I think 2004 should not be too expensive to replace as it may have been moved from difficult location my 03 has.

Did I say solenoid? I meant transducer. The IPC reads injection pressure and feeds back to control system to adjust in a closed loop manner. If defective, it will surge, especially at idle.

I agree with Forest. Change out the IPC. When they go, they don't throw a code, that's why the dealership can't figure it out.

you guys are on the right track, but it's called an ICP (injection control pressure) sensor... if you have an 04 motor, it's located at the front end of your passenger side valve cover.. if it's an 03 or early 04, it'll be under your turbo.. look at your passenger side valve cover for a colored sticker, it'll have the motors year on it..

once you find it, just unplug it and see if the idle smooths out.. if it does, replace it.. they can throw a code (P2285)..

Do you know what a tac tic is? A breath mint for a dyslexic.
As for the code - learn something new everyday. When mine went, it did not throw a code, guess that's why you said CAN throw a code, not WILL?

You got it.. Mine was throwing the code intermittantly before I changed the sensor.. I would clear it, and it would return days later.. Changing the sensor also got rid of the romp I had immediately after a cold start..

If it is a 5.4/6.8 there is a vacuum line on the Intake the does that, If it is a 6.0 the other guys told you the correct answer.

Yes you do, it's on the front driverside of your engine, just above the valve cover, near the alternator. Find the alternator, look straight down, and you'll see a gold/brass sensor with a pigtail going to it.

Similar issue

I've been chasing a similar issue with surging- I'm always putting coolant in, I have changed the reservoir and hoses. I'm seeing some white smoke more often and the main issue is surging starting at 65mph. I replaced the fuel pump, filters twice and each time it runs good for a day or two then it's back. I have an intake which broke a clamp causing power issue but after that fix it also ran well briefly. I do have a SCT programmer. I'm wondering if it's other fuel issues like injectors?? Or that ICP sensor?
