Surging engine

2006 6.0 Super Duty 4x4 Auto
Got in the truck today, cranked the engine and started playing with the radio when all of a sudden the engine started to slow down about 100 RPMs and then it reved to a little over 1000 RPMs. It continued to do this so I put it in gear and started driving. No more surge. I stopped at a traffic light and with my foot on the brake it would slow to about 500 RPMs and surge to A little over 1000.
Any ideas or help on this?
Thanks in advance

I just had the same issue:
Changed fuel filters - no change
Upgraded to new fuel pressure regulator "blue" spring - no change
Blew out air filter and cleaned ICP connector- problem resolved - leaning towards ICP connector

Thanks. I will look at that. However, since that day the problem has not resurfaced. That's a good thing, but scary, because you never know when and where it will happen again. Intermittent problems are the worst.
Thanks again.

Running the 6L you should have an odb2 gauge readrr, like the scangauge2, or newer smartphone apps. They let you monitor injector pressure and other essential data so when things like this happen you can often seen what is causing the issue. Otherwise you pay the shop and/or buy parts until you get the right one..

I have an obd2 code reader. Is a gauge reader the same thing or something different? My obd2 reader has not picked up any codes as of now. If the gauge reader is something different, where do you get one and how much do they cost?
Thanks

Mine did not throw codes either. Since, I bought a scangauge II. Now I can monitor my ICP and IPR, which I believe was my issue. Also, more importantly, I can monitor my EOT and ECT.

Well, yes, but not related to the surging. Don't have the code numbers, but one was for glow plug #6, which when I pulled it, omed it out, it showed infinitiy. Replaced, and problem resolved. The other was my fuel sender. It drops out at 5/8 tank, then resumes normal operation. I jacked the bed up, pulled the sender, cleaned the variable resistor PCB, and fixed that problem.

Again, did I have codes, yes, but nothing related to the surge.

I've only had this Scangauge II for two weeks, but can't imagine now running this truck without it. Typical gauge set up in these vehicles is BS (Oil Pressure, Trans temp, Engine Temp, boost, and gas gauge). Practically flying blind! I've got twenty more "gauges" programmed into my scangauge now.

Thanks everyone for all of the info on this problem. As I said earlier, it only happened that one day. I haven't done anything as of yet, because at present, I no longer have a problem. Kinda like, "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it".
