Thanks for all the help on my last issue. Much appreciation. My next question is. I just brought my 2001 Ford CC 4x4 7.3 home on Saturday. It has 92,000 and is completely stock. I have searched and read most of the threads on how to improve or what the average MPG for these trucks are.
According to the lie O-meter in town I am getting 10 mpg and I am keeping under 2000 rpms, or at least trying to. Every once in awhile it will sneek above but not often. Not sure on actual mileage yet, haven't put a full tank through it yet.
I don't know how long the truck has been sitting with out being drove alot. The individual I bought it from has like 5 trucks that he owns. So could old diesel be the problem or possible fuel filter needing changing.
Any help is much appreciated. This is my new baby. Love it so far.
all the above plus some. what i'd recommend first is to replace all fluids and filters first. 10 mpg is low. i run my 7.3 completly stock and get "around" 15 in the city. your fuel filter, air filter and moter oil is the first thing i'd do. then your tranny and rear differential and coolant. check the tire pressure and go from there. get everything nice and clean "fluids and filters"
and as far as "old fuel", if the trucks starts right up and idles fine i wouldn't be to worried about it. plus i'm sure with it being your "new" truck you'll be doing alot of driving and will burn thru any "sitting" fuel. good luck
I have a E99, almost stock, I run 15mpg when rodding it around, 16 around town casual driving, 19 to 23.5 on the hwy. Something isn't right. Make sure all fluids are well because your fluids can indicate something is wrong.
Let it breath! - Get a nice big air filter on it, like the 6637, make sure your exhaust isn't being restrictive and your EGTs are normal. Make sure you're getting the proper amount of boost.
My EGTs, which I think is a bit weird run about 250 to 600 on the hwy, mostly about 250 to 350 on lvl ground, boost runs 2 to 5 with normal acceleration, very little load and when going up a hill and will peg about 23 when I nail it hard and rap it out a little over 3K.
Also check the color of your exhaust as it should only smoke then getting on it and shifting. I only smoke during the winter months (A little white during warm up) and when I'm getting on it (grey or black).
Also pull the codes from your truck as there may be a faulty sensor causing incorrect timing of your injection.
It's lots to do, yes, but it's a must if you want your truck to love you.
I'll put my vote on for fresh fluids all around: synthetics if possible.
Engine oil: Shell Rotella (blue bottle) can be found at most Wal-Marts
Oil filter: Motorcraft FL-1995 - Wal-Mart too
Air filter - "6637" can be had from several places - best price & service was through RiffRaff Diesel - buy a pair at a time
Air filter cover - get one from Pete - (somebody help me with a website please)
Transmission: Napa's standard Mercon fluid or Royal Purple ATF ($$$ though)
Tranny filter - can be had from NAPA as well
Diff fluid - Royal purple 75W-140
Transfer case fluid - Royal Purple
Fuel Filter - get OEM/Racor from a sponsor of this site. www.powerstrokeshop.com or ED @ www.y2kfordparts.com for OEM
At 92k you're knocking on the door for a "major service".... meaning, change your diff & xfer case fluids in addition to tranny & engine oil.

What he said X2 here. Keep'm clean and when it's time for a new auto get a aftermarket. I don't remember the brands but there are better autos then ford's auto trajicks and they'll last longer and take more of a beating.
Let's hope he gets plenty more life out of his tranny, but given that he's in AZ, John Woods in Cali is going to be the best option. I'm closer to Arkansas (for now!! HAHA) so BTS will be where I go for mine... which I hope isn't for a long while yet!

Diesel if it sits too long, especially the ULSD, will grow a mold(organics) which will plug the fuel filter, but should not really effect mileage that much. I replaced my exhaust with a 4" performance system and replaced the air intake and the the ZOODAD mod. This gained me a couple of miles per gallon overall just by letting the engine breath a little better. I would change fluids just so you have a starting point, and if you use conventional coolant make sure you test and adjust the additive to get it up where it belongs. These trucks require a coolant additive in conventional coolants to prevent electrolysis damage. Napa carries the test strips. And don't forget the additive for the rearend oil. I believe it takes two bottles. Also check the pumpkin cover for rust through, that is an issue with the factory covers, only takes a few years to get pin holes.
You should be fine, just keep it well diluted with fresh diesel. These 7.3's seem to put up with a lot. I know, because when I first started making biodiesel, I ran some soapy, underreacted stuff. Probably two tankfuls and didn't realize it till the remainder of my first batch in the holding tank settled into a thick, gooey milkshake. Once I saw that, I topped off with pump diesel. Never skipped a beat, nor did I clog a filter, luckily. But I did do a pre-emptive filter change after that.
Kind of a funny story from youth. Neighbor got a new ford pinto of all things, and was really bragging up the mileage. gas was cheap then, so a few buddies and I started adding fuel to his tank a gallon a night. Amazing he would say, I am getting 40mpg out of this, ford really did it up right!
After about 2 months, we reversed the procedure.... 40 became 8mpg
hope your neighbor kids arent helping themselves to some free diesel and killing your mileage.....
