I have a 428 cobra jet motor in my truck and it has recently lost almost all power. No water in oil, swapped plugs, wires, distributor, coil, fuel pressure is good, changed intake gasket no luck. No leaks, compression check was good. runs at 20 advanced until now. i have to go 40 advance to move it out of garage. no chain its gear driven. motor has 8000miles on it. cn i get some help?
This might be a stretch but check the camshaft, see if the lobes have gone flat. Sounds like a retarded cam (doubtful w/ gear drive) or severe cam wear.
You can check the chain with out pulling the engine. Just take the dist cab off and turn the motor back wards untill the rotor moves, the turn it over the other way and if if it goes along way before the rotor moves you chain is sloppy.

I believe if you read the OP, he has a gear drive no timing chain.
I would take a look at the distributor drive gear it may be worn or the pin may have sheared.

It would be nice if it was just the dist. driven gear but I kinda doubt that's the problem. In the op hauntedz28 said he had to advance the timing to 40 deg. so that kinda lets the worn gear off the hook and if the drive pin had sheared it would be so far out of time at best it would backfire rather than run.
I'm betting on a worn cam. Oils nowdays are formulated for roller tappet engines and, as written about in this forum recently, don't have the zinc additives like they used to. This can cause accelerated wear/ failure of the camshaft.
Sad but true.
I hope I'm wrong and it's something simple (cheap) to fix.
I bet the camshaft PIN broke that clocks the cam to the timing gear.
The pin shears off and as the cam and timing gear rotate throwing the cam and timing off in the process. That's part of the reason for timing chains and timing belts, they transfer a lot less harmonics to the valvetrain compared to timing gears. Keep the gears to short runs and use a timing set for everyday use.
