Very worried 04 6.0PSD 81K had oil leak small drip from passenger side rear of engine dealer under extened warranty. Dealership replaced all CAC tubes, fron crank seal, rear main seal, power steering pump, lower ball joints alignment, was hefty bill and X spent 7 days in shop
Sunday AM, 280 miles later, zero oil pressure smelled hot oil inside truck, pulled over shut down and puddles of oil under truck, oil blowing back from dampner and rear main area all back along drive line and exhaust. From looks of it both the crank and rearmain seal are blowing oil big time.
X flatbeded to house, bucket is under X to catch the rest of the 15 quarts of oil that did not blow of seals.
Ford customer service going to be called tomorrow, going to have heart to heart about dealship etc etc. Question:
How much damage could have been done running engine at ZERO OIL pressure for approximately 8-10 minutes smelled oil than immediately checked pressure and took me that time to get off highway parked safely???
I would hope whatever damage done would be covered by the dealer. Demand a new engine. They won't waste the time trying to fix it. Get the head studs installed while they have it out. Did it get hot?
I would also demand a new engine; they obviously FUBAR'd the seal installs. One thing though, a 6.0L won't run for 8-10 minutes with zero oil pressure, since the HPOP would starve and then it wouldn't be able to fire the injectors. If the injectors were still firing, you still had oil flow, just not much or not to where the pressure sensor is.
YUP--the low oil pressure thing for engine damage won't fly. It's not possible for the injectors to supply fuel to the motor with no oil pressure. It's probably not nearly as serious as you think it might be. These engines are a whole lot tougher than they're given credit for when it comes to the lower end. Please do keep us informed on what happened though.
Engine was still running, the zero oil pressure was gauge indicated, so guess we had oil pressure to HPOP, engine did not get hot.
New engine is definitely on the table, and will do studs if can get Ford warranty engine with studs installed.
This dealership has already done an EGR replacement, and disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled the turbo, so this episode calls into question the quality of all that work, 12 hours of labor.
Going to call Ford Customer Service asking for assistanceAm going to call dealership, and settle out new engine conversation this AM.
Understand it might have to go back to dealership that did work to get issue resolved, but am going to bring everything I can to bear down on them, so what work that gets done is not FUBAR’d.
Will keep you informed.
My low pressure oil sending unit blew once, squirted oil everywhere, thought I had more of a problem then it worked out to be. It took awhile to clean the oil up enough to figure out exactly where it was coming from. Sender was $40, I think, and easy to change. You might do a little more investigating so you know where the oil leak is. Knowledge is power when dealing with the dealer.
Are you sure that the oil isn't running down the front and back of the motor from the top? It might be very hard to see, but it's possible they didn't get the turbo drain line back in place and it's running inside the valley and down. I've seen that happen more than once. For a mechanic to fubar not one but two crank seals on a very easy installation would seem really strange, but anything is possible. Did you get a check engine light?
Yes smeled hot oil, oil pressure gauge indicated zero, check engine light on.
Got back under truck today before flatbed took it over to dealership with flashlight. the dampner and nose of engine is sopping with oil.
The plastic cover at front of tranny, has oil dripping from it.
Reading some other posts I think front radiator has to be removed to get at crank seal, it does not appear to have been removed, to remove dampner then to R&R the front crank seal. If so, and radiator was not removed and with minimual clearance that can be why seal did not seat correctly.
Unchecking with others found out that rear main does require tranny to be removed, and if tranny is not reinstalled correctly can cause issue with rear main.
Could it have happened as they were pushing to get truck out before they closed on Sat?
Annoying espeically as I called to let them know not to push it, Monday or Tuesday would be just fine.
Per dealership, the oil pressure sending unit seal went bad, hence oil all over dampner on front of engine, rear main evidently rolled when installed, total oil loss was about 2 quarts. Asked how they determined that, they said they drained and measured what was left in pan and that came up to 11 or so quarts. Conclusion shut it down quickly enough to avoid major oil loss, hence little posibility
That's why your engine didn't shut down for lack of oil pressure. The sending unit failed causing a zero reading on the dash gauge, but the motor still had lubrication and the HPOP was still getting oil. It's a nasty mess, I'm sure, but still better than trashing your engine. They should be able to fix and clean it very rapidly--1/2 to 1 day at most. Thanks for checking back and letting us know what happened.
Got the truck back yesterday afternoon, was very impressed, not fixed but put truck up in the air, completely cleaning up the mess and on top of that topped off the tank, something to be said for being calm and pleasant with the service writer.
