The wife and I just got back from the little air show our local airport puts on each year. On display was a Commemorative (Confederate) Air Force Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bomber. To make a long story short, my wife and I ended up going for a ride! She sat backwards in the machine gun turret, and I sat behind the pilot facing forward. He took us outside of town and circled our house so our kids, 7 and 3, could see us fly over. He then took us to a local reservoir and made mock torpedo runs. He would take it down over the water, simulate the drop, then crank back on the stick a shoot up and out. What a great day. I have been an old airplane fan since I was a kid, so it was a real treat. On a side note, inside the plane was noisy, echoy, rattly, smokey, stinky, hot, and cramped. It was just like driving my race truck! I was right at home!
Cool...when we lived out west, the Confederate Air Force used to come to the Hawthorne airport, in CA....I have pics somewhere of the kids sitting in the spare tire mounted inside the Craft...Never got to ride in one tho.. Seem after looking in the cockpit they were missing quite a few gauges..I guess being restored..So I had my ruther's about going up in one..LOL..But Man those motors will rock buildings and shake windows...
