HELP! I was given a 1978 Ford pickup, F-150 4x4. It belonged to my father who passed away a few years ago and I would like to restore it. He replaced the motor with something other than the original and I have no idea how to determine the size. I am fairly certain it is a 360 or 390 but then again...
There are a few ways to determine what you have. The FE engine was not available in the particular year, though it is possible that one could have been installed, but it is more likely that another series of engine would have gone in there.
Perhaps another 335 series, or maybe a 385 series.
DO you know how many valve cover bolts there are?
Here is a start to atleast figure out the engine family your dealing with.
Engine Identification:
=================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow. The 351M and 400 are identical externally, only internal parts examination can tell them apart.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
The valve cover has 8 bolts and the exhaust manifold bolts are angled diagonally downwards. Guessing this is the 335 series? Is there a way to narrow down to the exact motor? I would like to put a 4brl intake/carb on it as well as headers, etc. but are the parts interchangeable?
There is a lable on the valve cover with "KL606AB" not sure if that means anything. Sorry for all the questions...'new Ford fan"
measure the intake width to determine for sure that it is NOT a 351C (should be over 12" across) that would leave 351M/400 and the only difference is the stroke then. You would need to somehow measure the stroke 4" = 400, 3.5" = 351
