Vacuum leak can't affect performance, because it's not _engine_ vacuum. It's "ginned up" vacuum from the pump. Idunno the automatics, but I doubt that anything about them is vacuum controlled; that's a '70s thing. Only thing the vacuum pump connects to (AFAIK) is the HVAC control and the power brake boost. A leak will usually sound like a hissing noise.
Update - the C6 tranny has a "vacuum regulator valve" tied to the distro block.
So then the vacuum lines have nothing to do with how smooth the transmission shifts? I ask because a friend of mine has a V10 with the 4R100 which is essentially the same as an E4OD, and when he replaced all the vacuum lines the transmission started shifting like brand new again.

His engine produces vacuum. I have no idea how the V10 with the 4R100 uses vacuum to control the tranny, but it's not gonna be the same as any of the autos with our PSDs. The 1995 EVTM shows no vacuum connection from the vacuum distributor block to the E40D.
