I have an 84' f-150 with a 302. It currently has the original 2 barrell carb and intake on it. I want to change it to a 4 barrell. I would like to use an edelbrock performer intake with a Holley carb. Can I do this without failing emissions testing? I'm in Tennessee.
can't really answer that question. go first to your local inspection station and ask that very question. find a well established location to pose that question to and ask for a list of items inspected.
as long as it is in proper tune, you should actually reduce your emissions. As long as the inspector doesn't look too hard. Technically, it's illegal, but I've never met anyone at an inspection place that knew what they were looking for. I have 50% emissions-illegal parts on my Atlanta, GA truck, and I didn't even come within 50% of the standards for hydrocarbons or N20 emisions, and that was with dual sniffers hooked up. I was taunting the guy the whole time, who was redlining the engine, trying his best to get it fail. I drove away laughing with a brand new sticker! I don't know about that Holley though, as Teschwab will tell you, I think that for a non-dragstrip engine that doesn't get a complete teardown after every trip, I don't see any reason to ever use a Holley when Edelbrock makes such a great product. You'll want to change that 2 bbl manifold though, you can put an adapter on it, but it will seriously restrict the flow, and some of the Holley/Edelbrock square bore throttle butterflys won't even clear the adaptor. Get an aluminum 4bbl intake, I recommend the Weiand action-plus for a stock replacement that offers better low end torque, as well as better HP gains all over. Jeg's has 'em for about $120. -TK
