If I have reverse rotation on the belt direction, reverse rotation on the water pump and the appropriate timing cover (the one on the right in the post from Conanski) is there a reason that this set up would not work correctly?

I drove to four different parts places today just to get the gaskets to remount this water pump and all of them showed this as a pump for a '90 and anything they came up with for an '82 was not the correct pump for this set up. As long as the pump, timing cover, and direction or rotation with the belt match up, then it shouldn't matter, correct?
