Ok, I started a thread on the powerstroke side and the kicked me over here so here it goes. 1993 Ford E-350 7.3L Trans light is flashing. Ihad codes read and got code 29 & 64. One is speed sensor and one is voltage problem with 4th gear. Is this something I can do with the trans in the truck or does it need to be out. I'm very competent tech just never dove into transmisions. So I'm looking for some advice or help on this. Once codes are cleared the van does fine for a while then it will kick into default and start shifting hard and holding gears to long.
Sorry fellas. It was codes 29 Speed signal and 62 4th circuit core? Thats what is written on my Estimate sheet. Going off memory last time.
David85- Where is the speed sensor? That answers that.
Speedometer works fine.
Spent some time afew mo. back working on the connectors I will check again. What code reader do you guys recommend. I cant get codes read at any shop without making an appt. I used to read codes for people for free. Whats up with the world today?
Speed sensor is on top the rear differential visible from the front. This also supplies signal for the odometer, cruise control, and ABS.
Code 62 is bad news most of the time. Means your converter clutch is starting to slip. This code gets stored when the lockup takes too long according to the computer.
What connectors were you working on? Where were they?
The connections were at the trans. One is on pass. side and wouldnt snap in or was missing the tang. and the other was on driver side and I replaced the harness connection with the sensor for PRNDL.
Ok I just went to the link Dave sent me. Thank you that will come in handy. According to that list my torque converter is on its way out. I might add that when I got the van the rearend was hammered (spider gear rod hogged out the carrier then killed the pinion)and the flex plate was totally broken in a complete circle around the crank. so does that mean I might get away with just changing the convertor? You guys are awesome its places like this that give us Hope ... Not our Gov.
What did that passenger side connector look like? Its common for water, dirt, and in your case, salt to get in there especially if the snap isn't holding it in anymore. Any signs of corrosion could cause the system to not work to the level of perfection that the computer expects (thus throwing a hissy fit!)
I was able to replace that connector with on off Ebay if you ever want to fix that. Cost me about $16 before shipping for an OEM replacement. Its very common for the tang to get broken off because there is a special procedure to unhooking it. Most guys get frustrated and take a screw driver to it with obvious results.
Ford later changed the design to something less infuriating.
For now, if its clean I would try to rig up a zap strap to hold it down to make sure there isn't a weak contact that could be causing your problem (assuming you haven't already done this).
One last question, are you sure the torque converter lockup is working?
The manual says for testing lock-up converter, Run vehicle to operating temp. Once happy auto is warm and in top gear set a steady pace and without removing foot from acel touch brakes with other foot while monitoring reves on tach. If lock up is working revs should rise slightly when you touch the brakes. The brake switch trips the converter and causes it to disengage. When you let off the brake pedal the revs should return to where they were within a couple of seconds.
Ok I got a scanner and have got codes 53 FIPL too high, 62 conv cltch slip, 67 clutch circuit . So were too from here I'm thinking new convertor... Fipl switch or adj. and ????
Need some Ideas guys
I purchased a new fipl and harness to repair the repair shops damage to the tangs. I will be changing that on Saturday. Does anybody have ideas on the trans??. I keep trying to fix the trans and end up fixing something else. Is that part of Murphy's Law?
