Needed changes.....

Complete Egr delete if it hasnt been done, headstuds when it needs headgaskets, regular filter changes, and dont skimp on cheap fluids or filters, SCT tuner with custom tunes, exhaust, gauges, and I would leave the stock air filter in place as you cant beat it for filtration, and its good for around 500 h.p. After that, GOOD LUCK, and you may want to buy something like AE software for diagnostics. Auto enginuity sp

From my research and first hand experience I think the following are essentials:<O</O
  • Follow through will all routine maintenance requirements - this is huge for the 6.0 engine. I fall in with those who are conservative on maintenance issues, I change fluids even more often than recommended in many cases (i.e. oil ever 5K instead of 7.5K, coolant every 50K instead of 100K for first change)<O</O
  • Use 5W-40 synthetic oil<O</O
  • Only use OEM filters for oil, fuel, & air. Oil & fuel should be Motorcraft or Racor (who makes them for Motorcraft) and air should be Motorcraft or Donaldson (who makes them for Motorcraft). I order mine from Diesel Filter Online and save alot over what the dealership charges (http://www.dieselfiltersonline.com/). <O</O
  • Use a fuel additive - like oil there are many on the market to choose from. I use Stanadyne Performance but recommend that you do research and decide which one best fits your needs.<O</O
  • EGR valve - keep it clean and consider replacing with the newest design which you may already have. I think the new design can be identified by a pink dot on the actuator. You might also consider the latest flash upgrade which either eliminates or reduces (not sure which) EGR operation when idling.<O</O
  • Avoid short hop trips and really open her up ever now and again (after everything has warmed up)<O</O
  • Add a coolant filter - got my from Diesel Site (http://www.dieselsite.com/) <O</O
  • CCV route - haven't done this yet but it's high on my list <O</O
  • Add guages for critical components - at a minimum this should include fuel pressure, oil temp, exhaust gas temp, & transmission temp <O</O

Do you know the date when this design of EGR valve was first used?

I am not sure if anyone really knows the answer to that question, maybe Bismic does. There was a bad run of EGR valves in late 07 or early 08, so I think that if you dont have the pink dot on yours then you would be ok to replace it now as most of the bad ones are long gone.

Ford described it in a TSB - pink dot signified an updated valve. Personally, I am convinced that the design changes on these valves were necessary ones. I sprung for an updtaed EGR valve at my own expense, just to get the more reliable design. As Sarge261 said - There was a bad batch of EGR valves produced also. My opinion - delete it or get the updated valve.

if stock muffler - get rid of it and at least allow the egts to flow....

new flow thru muffler like walker btm, or
cat back exhaust by silverline or etc....

and then an sct to wake it up !!!

First thing I did when I got mine was hit all the fluids and filters. There's 2 fuel filters, one of which requires a 37mm socket to do, and htere's no getting around it. It's $11.99 at the sears hardware, and you'll probably never use it for anything else, but it's worth it.

As others said, headstuds, keep an eye on that EGR valve, I've had mine out to clean twice now. It can be cleaned, uses about a bottle of brake cleaner or carb cleaner, and a tooth brush. Work the moving parts to get everything, let it soak, it'll make it easier.
