Irratic idle

I seached a bit w/o success. I have an 06 psd and all the sudden my idle is irratic and studders. I am at altitude as well about 6500ft. I am just hoping it does not leave me and the family stranded. The idle seems normal other than a semi frequent studder and the tach drops a little bit then back to normal. No lights on dash are showing any problems and temps seem ok. Anyone seen this before?

My very first guess would be ICP sensor problem, that's the #1 cause of idle issues. Usually it throws a DTC - even your check engine light's not on - a scanner would show the trouble code. Pull up to an autoparts store, they usually nice enough to pull DTC-s.

In my case it was an injector issue, although it ran FINE like that for months.....

just a blip in the idle every once in a while.... no lites, no dtc's ....

I don't know where the ICP plug is to pull it, but maybe you might try that....

Mine did that for a month or two until the Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM), Fuel pump/HFCM, and the ICP sensor were replaced. Never threw a code.

KRDiesel said it, unplug the ICP sensor and see if it smoothes out.

Mine was doing the same thing a few months back until the FICM failed and was replaced...now all conditions normal. Put a code reader on it and see what it tells you. If still under warranty it should be replaced with zero deductible $$...emmissions related...at least my dealer didn't charge me.

On an '06 it's on the passenger side valve cover.

Hmm, good advice so far. But this morning we went out and now the truck idles really rough all the time and there is no power. I mean, the thing barely moves even when the gas is floored.

I am stuck in Tahoe now with a $500 bill to tow it (even though we have the roadside assist program).

Any chance I can fix it myself? Do you all still think it's the FICM/ICP? I am going to go try to pull the ICP now... hopefully I can locate it. I think so based on what you guys posted..

Thanks a ton so far..

I just removed the ICP and restarted it. The idle was still rough/no power.

I put the ICP back in thinking it didn't help, but then the truck idle'd like it did yesterday with a rough spot every once in a while vs always rough. It had power again on accel.

The dealer won't be able to look at it for a couple days. If I think I can just replace a part I might have one overnighted here and fix it myself. Otherwise I might try to get it to run with power and head towards the dealer to try to save on towing expense.

Thoughts? (thanks again for everyone's help, you are amazing..)

I guess I also need a code reader and see what that turns up. I will check and see a local parts store.

I think I got it fixed.

I believe the total loss of power was simply low oil. I was about 3qts low. Hopefully others can learn from my mistake. I also disconnected the EGR valve, but I believe it was just low oil. I will reconnect it in the morning and see if that makes a difference, but I don't expect it will.

I think the idle was correctly diagnosed as the ICP as I played with it a bit more and now I believe that it idles better with it disconnected. I will take it to the dealer by my house and get it fixed w/o having to tow it.

Thanks for all the help here, hopefully others will find it later if they have similar problems.

3 quarts low? Is it leaking oil badly or has it been a long time since you changed the oil? That's very low! Hopefully there's no damage to the injectors.

Yeah, I hope it didn't. I don't see any oil leaks other than some around the turbo (thats probably bad too).

Today my erratic idle returned. So it's back to square one. I was reading another thread that said it could be the EBP sensor. It's just curious to me that all these problems started when I hit altitude:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...st-read-5.html

The total loss of power problem is gone (so far).

I now also seem to have a surge of power on steady throttle now as well. I am going to disconnect the EGR again and see if it helps.

Sheez, I am trying to be scientific as possible about this, but this thing is complicated.
