On my '91, neither the temp nor oil pressure gauges have worked since I bought it. The previous owner put a different engine in and ever since then they haven't worked. (I know for a FACT they worked with the original engine, owner before PO said so) I put new senders in for both. When I ground out the wire for either gage, I get nothing. I pulled the inst. cluster out and on the temp there are 3 terminals. 1 has positive with key on, one has ground with key on, and one has a very dim ground (I'm assuming this one to be the sender) But it I ground out the dim one the gage just barely moves, almost up to the C. If I jumper across the 2 ground terminals the gages moves to H. I'm confused.
I swapped in a KNOWN working dash and still nothing.
One thing I do know- where the engine wiring comes in behind the airbox, where those 4 plugs are, the wires are different colors on each side of the plug. This confuses me as well. Any help would be appreciated. For now I'm going to put it back together since I need to drive it.
If you open up the cluster you'll find that it is made of 3 sections, or 4 if you have a tachometer. You can replace those individually, and they can also die individually.
You can test the operation of the motor/pins themselves with a 9 volt battery. Give that a shot and see if you get any sweep to the gauge. If not, I'd say the contacts or motors in that section are kaput.
EDIT: I see you swapped a working cluster in. Now it comes down to a fault in the wiring somewhere, which is never fun to find.
