I have been trying for a year almost now to get my 94 F-350 to run at least close to my wifes 97 cali f-250. Both are powerstroke engines and 4x4 but the 94 is just a dog compared to my wifes. I can't find a single thing wrong with it either.
I have the 6637 air cleaners on both of them and now the 10k resistor on the 94. It certainly made more power but the 97 still winds up much much faster and will out haul it any day of the week.
I am considering the IDM 140 volt mod on the 94 now but concerned about destroying my engine with it.
We haul a heavy slide in and a very heavy 3 horse trailer all over the place with it and gross out well over 20k pounds. Most of the driving is highway but quite often I'll do dirt mountain roads lugging along the swithbacks in first gear too. I am scared to put an exhaust temp gauge on it.
Does anyone know if the idm mod will cause damage or should I just leave it alone?
1st off... Why would you be scared to put an exhaust gauge on it??? I'd rather know it's getting too hot and back out of it than to get it so hot it's melting pistons!!
As far as I know, the IDM mod will not cause engine damage. It if the changing of the restistor in the IDM isn't done right, it could damage the IDM.
Your 1st sentence tells me the main difference. Yours is a '94 with 90cc single shot injectors. Your wife's pickup is a '97 cali model. The '97 cali's came with 120cc split shot injectors which means they are putting out WAY more fuel than the '94. That means more power.
You'll probably notice that at idle, yours is louder than your wifes??? That's because the split shot cali injectors (although larger) are quieter. In '99 when the Superduties came out, they all have split shots from the factory too.
I know about the diffeence in the injectors, just dreaming I guess about making things a little more equal between the two trucks on the cheap.
Sometime before the end of the month I was going to replace all the injector o rings and ICP o rings on the 94 just for the heck of it. I did notice a very small amount of black on my last fuel filter change. Maybe I'll just wait and send out the pcm and IDM for the mods needed and replace all the injectors. I actually have 4 new AB code ones in my tool box that have been there for a while. I just need 4 more.
Who was that company that does the reprogramming on the 94 computers to allow full use of the obd2 dlc? I think they did the IDM mods too but I can't remember who it was.
if going with the split injectors, IIRC they put a lot more strain on the HPOP. So a different pump may be in order to run the splits especially when pulling. Thinking the Cali. models have a bigger pump.
I may be wrong though. I'm sure someone here will correct me if I am.
I really don't know if you can make it as powerfull as the 97 without getting more fuel in there. your looking at 4 more good spilt shots and a larger Hpop or stage 1's with a chip.

Nope on the HPOP, all the OBS' have a 15° pump stock.
Well, my 10k resistor mod just went to crap on the way home. The resistor broke. That didn't last long! I had it secured down good and don't understand it. Thankfully, I soldered male and female connectors to the two ends of the factory wire and just put it back together.
For some reason, my horse trailer was feeling like I had a load of lead bricks in it today istead of three horses. Maybe the resistor??? It was the first time I'd driven it with the resistor and the horse trailer but without a load it would move!
It's still feeling weak with the trailer but much better than with the resistor in place. It's about 15,000 pounds for the trailer. Not too much compared to what I usually pull.
I got a pack of them from radio shack. The same part number everyone recommends.
We are going on a long trip today with the horse trailer loaded. I'm going to play around with a few things along the way. Wish I had time to do the injector o rings before we leave but it will have to wait till next week.
I got my resistor from another member here on FTE who had extras. You can order them from digikey for about $6 for 5 resistors I think.
What resistor you needs depends on what IDM you have. IIRC the IDM100 and IDM110 need a 75k ohm resistor and the IDM120 needs 73.5kohm. But don't quote me on that.
