i have a 79 f250 w/ a 400 and I love these motors so much i have decided maybe upgrading and building a low cost powerhouse would be cool. I heard what parts are interchangeable but forget what are. I know the intakes need a spacer plate but if the heads are inter. like i have heard what might need to be done to them. i heard something bout shaving exhaust to be a flatter angle. any help is greatly apreciated. I'm getting a 400 short-block to rebuild. micro-polish and chambered ports are going to be done first but im lost for parts from there for my budget. I have connections to 351c parts for cheep but dont want to buy parts that wont work. machining really isnt a problem either. please help.!.!

Heads, valve train except push rods, and distributors. What you are talking about with the exhaust ports is a very complicated modification in which about an 1 of the head is milled off and replaced with a bolt on plate. Was a common NASCAR mod back in the day and I wouldn't recommend it for the street. You might be talking about something else but that is the common old school exhaust mod.

You dont need any 351c parts since all the nice parts are already available for a 400, including 0 decked high compression pistons and aluminum intakes that need no spacers, contact tim meyer 400 expert www.tmeyerinc.com,
Interesting mod, so they mill 1" of the exhaust port side?
Yup they milled the exhaust port pretty much off and replaced it with a plate that normally accepted 2" or larger header primary tubes. The cleveland weak spot has always been exhaust flow and back in the day you couldn't just buy aftermarket heads because there weren't any so guys had to get creative.
