Earlier post on need help please, now we know it is a eaton rear, dimensions work for width and springs. trying to determine ratio, after marking driveshaft, brake drum, getting not quite 2.5 rev. on driveshaft to turn drum. Seems awful low, might remove plate and count teeth. Any thoughts, experience would be appreciated. thanks
If only one axle is turning you have to turn the d-shaft through two revolutions of the drum to get the ratio. Sounds like it would be a little less that 5:00 to 1 ratio which is probably right. I think 4:86 was a pretty common ratio.
If thats the case, then this one is the same as the 4.88 that the truck has now. Can't believe this much trouble to get better rear ratio. When we do the same test on original 4.88, it takes 3 turns of d-shaft vs a shy 2.5 on the eaton i have on floor. I've called 23 different salvage yards. Can't find anything under '78 ford.
On other hand have been told gear can be changed in this one. Had searched yrs ago for new gear for original 53 3/4 . thanks for input, still digging.
If your original takes 3 turns vs 2.5 on the new one then the new one is definitely a faster ratio.
Do some more checking to see if you can determine the ratio. It might be what you are looking for.
thanks guys, since last post, we might have good one, frustrating thing i went to rocketmans site, they have one at yard 50miles away. don't care now, getting closer, just want to drive it again. still need info on this eaton rear for brake parts.
What did the Eaton come out of? I did not go back and check but I recall you said it was out of a 60's vintage Ford F250. I thought Ford only used the Dana 60 in the F250's after 55. My Dana 60 came out of a 68 F250, has 3.73 gear ration, limited slip, straight bolt in and I've had no problems buying brake parts (drums, wheel cylinders, shoes). Might still be cheaper in the long run to look at the one 50 miles away. Good luck
Have no idea what the eaton came out of. Spoke with the local dealer , gave me vin no. will this tell me what ratio? It is 68 long bed, 250. My 53 still has plate that tells ratio, does the 68 have this somewhere? Maybe should post that with that group.
If not, I can go there couple days, and check tube numbers. I f anyone here knows, the vin is f25apd40920.
I had went to the carparts.com, punched info in, and came up with about 20. Listed in relationship by closeness my mileage. About 4 pages down, find one listed in Pa. by the people who have sent me 1st a '78 ford rear, then this eaton. The printout said they still have a 69 250 rear. I'm on a first name basis with one salesman by now. So I call him and ask why he won't send me what I ordered and paid for.Point ed out the page, and gave him stock no. Depending how this works out , I 'll give names. One old local mech. told me they probably don't even have a yard, these guys say they have everything , then start searching for it.
On another note, has anyone insulated behind headliner, side boards, behind seat?
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR HELP.
VIN is for a 68 F250, 2 wheel drive, 6cylinder (240 cid, 1bbl carb), assembled in Twin Cities MN. I'm a newby myself but again I thought the 250's had Dana 60 rear ends. There are very knowledgeable parts folks on this site who can confirm/deny.
A 3.07 is not going to fly with 16 inch tires on an F-2. The little flattie could probably pull it, but you'll be replacing a lot of clutches and it will be a ridiculous slug. You really need to try to get around a 3.50 or 3.73.
Are you sure that its 3.07? Cause a F-250 would have a Dana 60 and the highest ratio available for that is 3.54:1. There was a Dana 61 that had 3.07 and 3.31 but those weren't available till the 70's.
the yard that has 3.07 also has a 69' 3.73. this rear is missing axle shaft, will the shaft from the 3.07 fit the other? They say the 3.07 is a '67, but who knows.
Closest one I will have to go look at, do know that 3/4 has 6 cylinder, long bed, thinking it could be 4.10 rear. Does anybody know if the late 60's have a plate like my 53 that shows engine size, gvw, ratio? Nobody on 60- 70 site replied.
on brighter note, is there a sweeter sound of cleaned up, overhauled flattie lit up for the first time?
