Tow a fifth wheel you will be happy to have the mirriors.
If I was going to be getting a 5th wheel, I would definatly go the SD route... My F150 is only rated at 3200# towing, yeah I could probably use a bit more but when you start talking 5th wheel and just about anything you would need extandable towing mirrors...

3200 pound tow capacity? Did you put a 4-banger in it?

You got a bad one lool, mine tows 10K effectivly!!!

The new ones do... thats my point. They keep making them bigger and more powerfull and people just complain more about how much they cost and the mpg. Ford already had great 10k# tow rigs, I dont really think they needed to beef up the 150 that much accept for braggin rights and to keep up with the joneses.
And no, my 150 doesnt have a 4 banger. And I like it 'light'. It isnt a bad one. Lots of people hated the 97-04 aero 150s but personally I think it was a smart move that they are undoing. If you really needed a tow rig / work truck they beefed up the 250/350's into the Super Duty. And then they toned it down for the 150s. But now they went back into making the 150 practically into a tow rig. IDK. Just seems like the lines are getting kinda greyed between the two anymore. My SD was the same price as the closest you could configure an F150 for...
the build and price site makes the 250 seem like a bad idea compared to the 150 but it really is so much more truck than an f150
Well it all depends on what you want. For what I want the SD is practically cheaper. For example I just opened up two windows one build and price F250 and one build and price F150. Picked XL for both. Only went as far as the choose your model screen (select cab/bed/engine/tranny/gears). I select crew cab for both. 8' bed for the F250, unfortunately not avail on F150 so strike one there (selected 6.5' instead). Engine, I selected 6.8L V10 for F250. Unfortunately with the F150 it isnt even letting me pick the largest engine, I am stuck with 4.6L WTF? Strike two. Transmission, F250 I select 6 speed manual. Unfortunately no manual even exists for the F150 anymore (strike 3) so I select the 6 speed electronic. Gears... on F250 it comes with upgraded gears 4.10LS included in the V10 package. On F150 I have to upgrade to even get 3.73's and LS (I wont count that as a strike because 3.73 is good enough for my needs, although going with 35" tires I think is even pushing it with 3.73 and the smaller 8 cyl). And lastly, 4x4 for both. Price so far... F250 cheaper by about 500 bux. F150=33,175 and F250=32,650. On top of that there are 3 major things I could not get with the 150 that I really want.
But like I said it depends on what you want. Some want the automatic tranny which would cost more in the SD. Some dont haul anything that would need the 8' bed, etc. There are lots more options and things that one has the other doesnt down the line but you see from a good starting point how close they are.
And also keep in mind I am kind of playing devils advocate here, not trying to cut down on the current gen 150, its one of the best half tons to date, and is one sweet ride. Just my preferences put me into the SD even though I dont need the extra towing weight (although the extra in bed capacity will be used).
Both the 150's and SD's are really putt'n the hurt'n on the competition me things.
You are so right Neptoess, The 250-350 are way more truck than the 150 and they should be. You can get a heavy duty truck for about the same price as an f150 with all the tow package and what ever else is needed to haul a big load. Better off just getting the heavy duty 250.
We'll i seriously looked at jumping up to a Diesel F250/350. Truck for truck option for option after tax I had a difference of just under $20,000 Cdn (@ 93% USD). At 25,000 miles a year (after I put on a new exhaust system so it gets good "old" diesel MPG included in cost diff) it would take me 14 years to recoup the diff. Based on todays fuel prices. We all know fuel prices will go up but based on $$$ it's not cheap.
I looked at same with a V10 but then there is a MPG penalty.. And now w/the 2010 I can't even get 20"s etc... Not an option. Will look at the 2011's early next year with the new 6.2L and see how those work out. But when fuel $ goes up again that would be a scary option to own.
eh, diesels are nice but the 6.0L/6.4L are kind of a gamble. If you can find a 7.3L with under 100k I'd say jump on tht, although the only ones ive seen around here are priced at about 22k. Little high for me
I am ordering a 2010 FX4 5.5 SC. I plan on hauling my Hualmark 7x14 box trailer loaded with, at the most, four sport bikes and driving hundreds of miles to a bike event or loaded with three sport bikes and two rolling tool boxes to the local race track which is one hour away. Both scenarios are probably around the same weight.
Considering this do I need the Max Tow Package or will the standard tow package work?
In Canada we don't have to get the big mirrors w/Max tow. I would regardless, but don't have to.
I know I'm coming late to the party...but...I am attempting to build a 2010 F-150 FX2 with Max Tow (53M) and black manual telescoping power heated trailer tow signal mirrors (54P). I can order the basic tow package (535) and add tow mirrors (54P). However when I order the max tow package (53M) I can longer order the towing mirrors (54P). I don't understand why I can't order tow mirrors with a towing package. I believe there is a glitch in Ford's build program. I have contacted customer service and am told that to get the mirrors I have to order the XLT package, which is for the XTR? The dealer has offered me the accessory mirrors but they aren't the same. Does anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions? I would appreciate any input. Oh ya, I live in Ontario.
I ended up with the max tow package and tow mirrors. I wanted to get the normal sized mirrors but couldn't with max tow. I like the bigger max tow mirrors but they don't auto retract. This is one feature that I think Ford really neglected to use any common sense. Why do the smaller mirrors have auto retract when the bigger one need it because of their size?

If your serious about ordering a new F-150 I would go to a dealer and sit down with a salesman and go over your options. Fords beta build site drives me nuts and has some errors in it.
