Ok, i have a big issue. i have a 79' f100 stepside, it has the chain style tailgate, with the latches and what not. well it was very rusty and in rough shape. yesterday i was moving some small steel blocks (2x4x8'') and they were packed nicely ina box well the straps i had holding them to the toolbox i have in the bed snapped while taking off from a stop sign going up hill, the box (being very small and very heavy) slammed into the tailgate and smashing it out. busted the top and bottom tubes. i have been looking all over the internet for a replacement(most being $350+ which is not a problem) and i can only find chain style for 68 and older... are they all the same??? i know the hardware is the same from like 48-80 but are the tailgates the same?? if i cant find one ill make one from scratch out of some tube rails and dimond plate/box tube (2''x4'') for the outside channels. if someone could help me with a site to go to it would be fantastic.
THanks Brian.

ok, im wondering if this truck is rare.it has a cab of an early 80' but the bed of a 70' stepside. having a hell of a time finding the parts i need.
Did you mistype this or something? How do you have a '79 F100 if you have an 80s cab? If what you typed is accurate, then no, it is the farthest from rare that you can get. You have what millions of people around the country have...mismatched pieces. I'm not surprised that you are having trouble finding parts...what do you tell them you have when you walk in the store?
No...I just told you that...it's too short at 49 13/16" long.
B7C-8340700-A fits 1957/72 F100 with 114" & 115" wheelbases ONLY.
This tailgate fits (among other years) 1973/79 F100/350 Flareside: D8TZ-8340700-A- 54 13/16" long.

I can see why you're having trouble finding parts.
It's not rare at all, because Ford never made any truck like this. It's been made up by a previous owner from various bits and pieces from other years.
If it has a 1980's cab..it could be any year from 1980 thru 1996 as all these cabs are pretty much alike.
What is your trucks VIN number? It will be 11 digits long thru 1980. 17 digits long 1981 thru today.
If the Flareside bed is from a 1970's truck, what is the length of the tailgate you need? 1957/79: It's either 49 13/16" long or 54 13 1/6" long. There is nothing else.
btw: Ford called these trucks Flaresides. A stepside is a Chevrolet.

F10 = F100 2WD
G = 302 2V
N = Norfolk VA Assembly Plant
DJ4656 = 1979
You said the cab is from a 1980's truck, are you sure of that?
Are you sure what the bed is from?
Is it from a 1973/79? If so...there is ONE Flareside tailgate 54 13/16" long.
