I was just reading an article about rebuilding a Ford 6 and saw this about the oil slinger on the crankshaft. The comment was that while needed when using a Ford standard timing set it was not needed when using a double roller timing chain set. I have never heard that before and wonder if it is true in regards to any Ford engine.
I've had my doubts about wether you need one or not, but have always installed one. If what you heard is correct, perhaps the Ford top gear (which is slippery nylon) needs more oil than a steel one.
I kind of think that the lower gear and chain would do a pretty good job splashing oil around, even if the slinger was removed. Not to mention the top gear getting oil from around the cam front bearing via the thrust plate would splash everywhere.
It may help keep oil from getting past the front seal. Regardless, the Ford engineers thought it necessary, so I wouldn't argue much on it,...jsut leave it in.
Kind of odd info for you to have found. Why would anyone leave it out, unlesss they lost it somehow....
